The quality of the plugins (Pultec, LA2A, 1176 and the reverb) sound excellent to my ears... The others seem OK from my little experiments, however I'm severely disappointed at the interface of those other plugins. I see what you mean by 'buck rogers' They need to take a leaf out of Waves' book.
This CPU munching thing geez...
I was hoping this card would increase my computers ability, allow me to do much more complex mixes and add FX my processor could never handle on it's own.. but if my CPU is hovering around 80% or so and I use more than 40% of the UAD1's processor it just seems to die. Argh!
I'm also unimpressed with the number of plugins the card is capable of running, I think it just needs more horsepower - do I really have to buy a second card to run as many plugs as I want?!
I'll try that little experiment of yours tomorrow pipe.
In the meantime, I think I'm gonna upgrade my CPU... that's a guaranteed increase!
OK, after some serious experimentation, I'm starting to really enjoy this card!
In my Vegas projects that have less events everything seems to be far more efficient. Not having a CPU munching issue, more just spikes on first playback. However things get unexpectedly choppy when neither the CPU or the UAD1 should be close to maxxing out so maybe it is munching when more plugs are added. At this point the machine locks, so can't really tell!
You have to be careful with the use of the LA2A, 1176, Pultec, Realverb and Nigel because they eat masses of the UAD1's power.
However, the EX-1 and lots of the smaller individual plugins seem better quality than I had thought... really downright useful once you get used to the interfaces. Plus, they use hardly UAD1 resources and still sound as good or better than most of my Native plugins, including the Waves Renaissance etc. I can use these for the nuts of my work.
I am now impressed.
The LA2A's and 1176's are simply awesome. I've never heard anything like it, and you can still have 3 or so of each plus smaller FX plus a few Pultecs before the card chokes. Not bad.
That's at 24bit 44.1Khz
I'm even thinking of a second one... for sheer compression greed.
NIGEL I don't really dig as a whole cos I have too many nice real amps and mikes in the studio (MESA dual rectifier + 4x12, Peavey 5150 + 4x12, Marshall JCM 2000 4x12)
Why bother...
However some of the sub-plugs from Nigel are truly cool. I.E. a tremlelo which not only sounds incredible.... but is fully automatable
wow.
The quality of the Realverb seems excellent... I tend to solo and render the verb to a track and remove the plugin to save UAD1 resources though.
Hell, if I could afford it I'd have four of these things. The UAD1's spread the plugs across the multiple cards. I'd like to see that in action!
In a fast computer I can't see how it would be possible to need more processing than that!!
"....some improvements for the DX implementation with the 3.1 release for PC."
Will Shanks / Universal Audio
It looks like DX users will be getting some attention in the next 3.1 update, due for release in four days, April 30th. If the CPU munching issue, in using ACID Pro 4b and Vegas 4b with the UAD-1, is fixed, my last and only remaining problem will be resolved.
but it seems in 3.1 we get an optimized more CPU efficient LA2A with better performance at low frequencies and a 1176 lite with almost the same sound but less CPU.
two weeks. hope it happens and can't wait. supposively the day after we get th e dreamverb also
"I hope they fix the Unsolo bug! I already mentioned it to them, can you guys also ?"
Pipeline, what is the "Unsolo bug". I don't think I have encountered that one. The soloing and unsoloing of individual tracks and Aux buses seems to be working fine for me using the DX plugs in 3.01 @ 256 samples (5msec), ASIO mode and Vegas 4b. Is that what you are talking about?
"...disable the fx through vegas's interface checkbox and the track or buss becomes out of sync with the audio!"
webpuppy, when I disable/enable the PPI's either from the track inserts, Aux buses or Main out via Vegas's plugin interface, the audio tracks stay in sync with the rest of the project during playback. At least for me, I have not noticed this to be a problem.
So far the only problem that I continue to have is the CPU munching, that I have discussed many times before, adnauseam. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the 3.1 update.

It appears that the next free UAD-1 3.1.0 update, May 15th, will be well worth the wait.
From Joe, today, @ Universal Audio:
"Among other things, the new 3.1.0 drivers will have better performance in DX hosts, plus we've optimized the LA-2A and 1176LN, and added a super efficient 1176SE."
-Joe 5/09/03
The new super efficient 1176SE will be a new plug, check it out. From the latest UAD-1 webzine, May issue. Check the UAD-1 Tricks section:
