I could be mistaken, but I don't think SB would be an "upgrade" compared to Vegas 3.0. If I understand it correctly, SB is a true consumer level app, whereas Vegas is truly a pro level NLE.
The writer is probably thinking of the inclusion of DVD Authoring in SB and such things as that. That sort of thing is an expensive extra for Vegas that costs more than the complete SB.
To sum it up, you pay more for Vegas and you have MUCH more control and cabability in the professional sense. If you need to make DVDs, and that is your principle need, and you have not used many of the high-end features of Vegas, such as MANY more tracks and the Color Correction tools (in V4), etc. then you may well be happy with SB.
If, however, you are ambitious and spend LOTS of time editing, sometimes with more tracks than SB can handle, you need to stick with Vegas.
Try this idea out for size. If you like to edit in Vegas 3, and don't want to move up to Vegas 4, but you want some minor capabilites to make a DVD, then use Vegas Video 3 to make your project and render it to a final form (a completely rendered continuous .AVI), and then use SB to print it to DVD.
Now, don't get me wrong. That is NOT the professional approach. You will definitely be limiting yourself by not using Vegas 4 + DVDA, but IF, and only IF you don't need the tools in Vegas 4 + DVDA, then perhaps SB might solve your authoring of DVD urges.
Personally, I could probably go that route myself, but I REALLY like Vegas 4. BIG TIME! It beats the socks off Vegas Video 3 (plus SB).
I’m not sure if you guys realize that the ‘Integrated DVD authoring” is just a stand alone copy of MyDVD that is packaged for FREE with many DVD burners. People who have bought Screenblast MovieStudio are already looking at buying Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 because MyDVD won’t accept MPEG2 files from MovieStudio, doesn’t support setting chapter points, and has a tendency to make coasters. (they have a forum full of unhappy users)
If all you want is inexpensive DVD authoring, get Ulead MovieFactory 2 ($45). If you want more control over making DVD’s than MovieFactory 2 provides, then “upgrade” to Vegas 4+DVD. I would NOT by SB just to get a copy of MyDVD! That makes so sense at all. Like I said, you can’t even set chapter points. What is a DVD without chapter points? (answer: a really clean VHS tape) ;-)
I have Nero 5.5 that came with my CDRW, how does it compare to Video Factory?
I am not professional video editor. I wanted to do some really nice videos but find time is extreme short and quite often I just dump everything in the time line and render it without much work. So something that could automate the process would be good.
