What do you want the screensaver to do?

Also probably overkill, but Multimedia Fusion is a wonderful piece of software. $99

There's probably much cheaper, shareware stuff available. I'd check download.com

Thanks for your replies. I checked out download.com and found two options, $20 and $50, respectively. But no AVI support. I'll keep looking.

I film sports teams, highlites, college recruiting tapes, etc. Currently I want the screen saver to add value to my packages. My plan is to use the graphics I create for the video, for each team and player, on the screen saver.

Buying Flash, and Fusion may be overkill, but I'll look at them. Learning curve is critical, because of my limited time. Thanks again. John.

Microsoft Powertoys free on their website has a video screensaver which you can install on your PC.You then select a clip and Windows will play it as a screensaver.

How you would package it for distribution is something else and probably not what you have in mind.

I haven't tried it, but I think this is what you're looking for:

The best thing I've found is ProShow Gold ($59) available at www.photodex.com. It allows you to make stunning slideshows, but you can simply insert a video source as a slide, make that the only slide in the show, then compile it to a screen saver (SCR File). So far I've only tried video with a wmv source, but I think it imports avi and mpg. You can download a 15 day free evaluation.
