I don't think the update to 708 ever came along. I used to be able to give the TV station that aired my show the .svt file that vegas would generate with my subs, and they were able to convert them to 708 on their end, but to the best of my knowledge, Vegas doesn't natively support it.

Yah I can confirm now 100 percent it still doesn't work. Just makes a bunch of garbage for 708. Hard to believe in this day and age adding captions is so cumbersome and difficult to do. Even Premiere Pro doesn't seem to want to do it properly, consistently either.

And the other apps that do it are beyond ridiculous in price (at least this was the case back in my TV producer days).

$1700 for captioning software that looks and functions like it was written in Windows 3.11 is insane. Truly.

And to make things even stranger, the standard of HDMI cable doesn't carry Closed Caption. It has to be converted to open caption before it reaches the HDMI. That really strikes me as poor planning.

@Former user I don't think that's uncommon though, as far as I know in most cases until it's actually broadcast or encoded to media - like an HDCAM Tape - most if not all hardware will only carry captions over SDI/HDSDI. That's not a Vegas exclusive issue.

No it is not uncommon. The HDMI standard does not support Closed Captioning. My point was that even in age of tech, not only is 708 apparently not easy data to create, the hardware for most homes does not support it. I know it is not a Vegas issue, it is an industry tech issue.

@Former user sorry, I see what you mean now. :) Yes, agreed - the whole captioning thing is very 1960s. LOL
