Anyone using an IDE RAID HD setup for Vegas?

We are building a new church with a recording studio and we
are getting Vegas and I'm building a computer to do the
recording on. I'm on a tight budget but don't want to cut
any corners and have heard great things about the Promise
IDE RAID controller. You can put two drives together and
the computer sees it as one big one and uses a method
called striping that allows SCSI speeds and SCSI cpu
utilization. NOW for those who use Vegas with normal IDE
UDMA drives you might also tell me that knowing we'll
probably never use over 30 tracks is IDE's alone enough?

Personally with the new UDMA66 drives out now I don't see
how they could be that much slower than SCSI and certain
brands use very little CPU cycles BUT I want to use what's
best but also what's practical.

Thanks in advance.

While we never recommend any hardware, I can say that I have the
FastTrack66 with a set of 16 gig drives set up as a stripe set. It is
a very nice setup. It equals the performance of a SCSI driver
software RAID under NT for less than half the cost.

Lots of storage and RAID to go along with it. It will accomodate upto
4 drives and the configurations can be variable. I have the 32 gig
striped set and a 24 gig extended partition which is made up of two
unequal sized drivers. The hardware will also do mirroring if you
have critical data you are concerned about.

Under NT the performance is outstanding with Vegas. There are many
things that can account for DAW performance, so giving anykind of
numbers would be for specific situations at best. Basically, milage
will vary depending on media type, project settings, and amount of FX
you are using in a given project.

Thank you Peter for your reply. One last quick question.....would
the performance be comparible, if not the same, under Windows98?

I do run it under 95 and 98. I have not run any benchmarks, but I do
achieve a higher track count here as well. By higher track count, I
mean stressing Vegas with nothing but a large number of tracks each
with a long wave file. It gives me an indication of the increased
thoughput of the RAID vs standard IDE.

This kind of use is not what non-linear editing and Vegas are about.
Faster disk access will let you stream more simultaneous files, but
other factors can reduce this - CPU load through FX and format
conversion will always play a roll in the what you can or cannot do.
