Anyone with a Canon XL1s and Windows XP

Am curious if you can tell me if your capture app acts funny in Vegas; Poor GUI control while in capture, timecode that runs and freezes every couple of seconds, etc.

This seems to be a problem with the XL1s and any 1394 capture software, but I'm wondering if it's specific to Windows 2000 and works any better in XP.

I had a similar problem with the Canon GL2 - with the timecode that works...but seems to cache, specifically in Windows 2000. No problems in ME, seems ok so far in XP.

I use the XL!-s with win2k pro with no problems. Check your 1394 driver in the
network section and if your network is got the 1394 card on it delete it off the network
so that only the fierwire driver is on the 1394 card. This may help out.

You might also want to be sure you are not using the firewire from the Audigy sound card--I had several problems with it, which are resolved now with a TI chip based firewire card.

It does that with both of my Panasonic cameras.

Yeah, we've experienced this symptom with two XL1s cameras running into Windows XP since late 2001. Sonic Foundry has commented on this in the forums, claiming that the cameras don't report timecode continuously, and it's not the fault of the capture app.

Hmm. Well what I don't get is that so far I've seen mixed responses; Some say it works fine, others experience what I experience with the same setup.

I've got a message in to Canon but I'm not optimistic they're going to do anything about it either. Grrph.

Thanks all for the info though.

I got a reply from Canon:

"Canon is not aware of, nor has Canon encountered, any pervasive difficulties regarding the firewire transfer on the XL1s camcorder."

They go on to give some suggestions about hooking up the camera and making sure "DV IN" isn't flashing sporatically in the viewfinder (which for me it's not).

Oh well. Might try and find someone near me with XP that I can shove this camera on and see if it acts any differently, and take it into work and shove it on a Mac and see what it does for the hell of it.

Well, just thought I'd report back. I wiped out my Windows 2000 install and put on XP. So far, my XL1s is controlling MUCH better under XP than it was in 2000. No idea why, but I'll take it!
