&$%^##&* Apple QuickTime

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:24 PM

Hello,

I've just started with Vegas Pro and I have a video that I want to edit, but when I try to bring it in to Vegas, I keep getting a message that I need to install QuickTime.

I have no need for QuickTime on my computer and am not interested in installing it.

I have tried in many different ways to re-encode the video by using Handbrake, but no matter how I encode it, when I try to import it into Vegas, I keep getting the &^$%^#&&* QuickTime prompt.

Would anyone have any idea how I could re-encode this video file in such a manner as to thoroughly excommunicate QuickTime out of it?

Any help appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

In Handbrake are you converting to mp4 or m4v?

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:31 PM

I believe I've tried both... lemme check...

EricLNZ wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:33 PM

Mp4 shouldn't demand quicktime but m4v possibly does as it's an Apple format.

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:39 PM

Ok, I don't have much experience with Handbrake as well, or video formats/codecs either, I'm new to this field of endeavour, maybe I'm doing it wrong...

See here: http://postimg.cc/Snpc4QSr

For the Video Codec drop-down, I've tried both H.264 (first option), and MPEG-4 (3rd option).

On the first screen I selected MP4. http://postimg.cc/yJpJD7H2

Anything else you think I'm missing?

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:46 PM

Alright, I'm trying again encoding to .mkv, I seem to recall having trouble importing an .mkv file to Vegas a few days ago, maybe it was a fluke that the .mkv was encoded in such a way that Vegas had trouble with it.

Let's see if this .mkv file will import into Vegas, and if the Apple crap will be finally exorcised.

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:52 PM

No, Vegas can't seem to import .mkv files... which is why I'd not purchased it many years back. I didn't expect this to still be an issue.

Could someone let these people know that we've put many men on the moon well over 50 years ago... the logistics, the sheer complexity of this task far eclipsed the difficulties of importing an .mkv file into a $400.00+ piece of software.

Unless I'm missing something basic here, this inability to import any file into a program should be very shameful, actually.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:54 PM

You need to export as mp4 (file type). MPEG-4 is a codec type. Confusing I know.

So your mp4 on the first screen is okay. With the video codec I personally leave it on the default H264. What the difference is I don't know. My limited understanding is that H264/MPEG-4/AVC are all much the same.

With the first screen check that the "Save As' at the bottom shows mp4 (and not m4v) at the end.

Lastly you can upload images directly to this forum. It is preferred to using an external site. There's an upload button

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:59 PM

Therein lies the problem, on the first Handbrake screen (the Summary screen), if I choose MP4 in the drop-down, at the bottom, I see Save As:, the filename, and m4v as the file extension. I see nowhere that I can change the output type, I can't imagine that just renaming the file from m4v extension to mp4 would change how the file is encoded, but I guess I can try that.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/5/2021, 6:59 PM

Is there a reason you need to use mkv?

Anyway in VMS Platinum 17 there's an option in Preferences/File I/O to activate a mkv reader. I assume it's the same in Vegas Pro. It has only been introduced relatively recently. Which version of Vegas Pro are you using?

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 7:00 PM

Ah! I could try VMS... ok... sec...

EricLNZ wrote on 5/5/2021, 7:03 PM

In Handbrake go to Tools/Preferences/Output Files and select mp4 as below

I wouldn't have thought this necessary if mp4 is selected in your first screen but this is how I have it and I never have problems.

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 7:14 PM

LOL!... Well I'm really thinking "Grrrrr!"... I just fired up VMS and never even got into it, program crashed.

Going to try Handbrake again with settings as you've suggested. That might do it.

Vegas has had this long-standing problem with being like an adolescent with food fussiness, it whines every time you want to import a file, if it doesn't like them, at least it should be giving you the option of doing an automatic conversion to a format that it has a taste for.

No, changed the settings in Handbrake, converted/re-encoded again, still complaint about QuickTime. 😡😡😡

Appreciate your help though, I'm starting to realize that my past aversion to Vegas was well-founded and that I might have made a big mistake in thinking that the past issues would surely have been dealt with by now.

weird that MP4 requires QT... although of course need to see in more detail what Video and audio codec it uses. But for most MP4, it uses AVC video and AAC audio. Other is HEVC video and AAC Audio.

Can you post the Mediainfo of that MP4?

Ok, checked the file properties on the same file I was trying to import into Vegas, from Vegas, as per instructions you'd sent above.

The results from the MediaInfo program, that I copy/pasted above, were also from the file I have trouble importing into Vegas.

Thanks... I just try analyze that (*.m4v) , and similarly converted via Handbrake

By default selection of Fast 1080p30 it already preset to generally-recommended.

The usage of so4compoundplug.dll is correct.

Even in File I/O, try using legacyAVC, it will using compoundplug.dll instead of qt7plug.dll

I wonder... I think I'd tried setting the Audio to .mp3, thinking that I might further reduce the file size that way... maybe that is what caused the QT prompt prob? I wouldn't think so, but re-encoding exactly as you suggested above.

Oh, wait a sec... "Even in File I/O, try using legacyAVC"... where is this?

N1755L wrote on 5/5/2021, 8:09 PM

Conversion done, seems to be working fine now... whoohoo! Going to edit and see if all fine now... looks good so far!

Thanks again for your help guys!

excuse me.... looks like you are using Vegas Pro 16... while I currently experimenting in Vegas Pro 18... so the setting are different.

ah ok - so what's the solution for you that works? Is it using audio MP3 instead of AAC?

I think it was the opposite of that, previously I was using .mp3 for the audio, this time I used AAC as you suggested. :-)

Ah right... good to hear then. Well, AVC Video + MP3 Audio is a bad combination.

Ok - glad we found your issue, and happy editing!

just hover mouse on it, and you can change your picture profile / avatar 😉
