Applying Transitions

I am having a strange problem dragging, as the help files explain is the correct way to add scene transitions. Once a chosen transisition is selected, and then an attempt is made to drag it to the time line, the cursor chnages to a circle with a diagonal line through the middle, obviously not allowing me to place the transition between two scenes. I am working with a MPEG 2 file and have both audio and video tracks in the time line. I am obviously doning something wrong when trying to do this very simple task.

Can someone please assist.

Much thanks!!

The clips have to overlap before you can apply a transition.

Overlap the clip to the desired transition length. Vegas will create an automatic transition. If you want to change it, right click on overlap and select desired transition.

You can actually apply a transition without first overlapping clips.

Drag the transition to the edge of the clip(s). The cursor will show the circular image with the line through it until you point directly onto the start/end of the clip. It will then change to a '+' symbol and you can then drop the transition.

You can then drag the transition to the desired length.

As they say, more than one way to skin a cat, particularly in Vegas.

Also note that “Cut-to-overlap conversion” sets the default length and alignment for the transitions. It’s found under Options/Preferences/Editing…

By the way, if the ‘circle/slash’ cursor is not changing to a ‘+’ at the desired scene change when dragging a transition to the timeline, it is probably that the scene changes are not separate events. If this is the case, you can first split the event by placing the timeline cursor at the appropriate scene change location and press the ‘s’ key, and then apply the transition.
