Applying Video Effects Integrate with Black Bars in Widescreen video

I shot video in widescreen mode on the dv camera. I'm editing in vegas now, but whenever I add video effects to the vido track, the effect integrates with the entire screen including the black bars on the top and the bottom.

I don't want the effects to integrate with the black bars cause I want to render it in widescren. I want the black bars to remain black and not get afected by any effects I add... I hope this makes sense.

what are your project properties set to? Ive done this once before witht he black bars. I changed the pan/crop to 16:9 aspect and made sure my project properties were for 16:9 as well and everything looked fine when rendered out.

Hi Omar,

To get around this, apply a solid on a video track above everything else in the project, then crop it the way you want the project to be.
Then go to the "composition mode" of that track and apply "Multiply (mask)".
Now every video track below this top track will have its crop properties and the effects will work just fine.

Omar, are you saying you shot 16:9 but are rendering to 4:3? Otherwise, If you are rendering to 16:9 you shouldn't have this problem if you've set the project to 16:9 and set the aspect ratio to 16:9 in pan/crop.

Some effects like Glow or Light rays will "overflow" and get on these black bars.
What I usually do about this problem is put a track at the top with mask to "re-reproduce" the black bars.
Can be Bezier Mask or a double set of tracks with cookie cutter (one for top bar, another for bottom bar)

I think what TeeTime said worked for me. I was applying the ratio 16:9 but I did not crop. I cropped out the black bars and now video effects dont integrate with the black bars since they are now out of the frame in Vegas,

I still want them to appear on the final rendered version.
I rendered in widescreen ratio and it looks like the black bars are shown on the mpeg when played on the PC. I hope when I burn on DVD the black bars still appear.
