Arch 4.0b Locks up Laptop tight when "Make DVD"

Peter Vred wrote on 9/27/2009, 7:01 PM
Long time DVDA user.
New Lenovo Laptop works great with VEgas 7.
But DVDA is locking it up when I go to finish my DVD, by clicking on Make DVD.
The dialog box never opens, system hangs.
Mouse freezes up after about 30 secs.
The only way I can reboot the laptop is to unplug it and remove the battery.

Any ideas?

It could be a number of things, including an outdated version of Quicktime (which the program needs to work with video files) or lack of free, defragmented hard drive space. (You're best with at least 50 gigs free an defragmented.)

It could also be your source files for your video. Are you building this DVD from DVD quality MPEG2s exported from Vegas?

so it locks up when you use the make dvd & you can't prep one to be burned??? :'(

Just for testing, maybe download & try DVDA 4.5/5 & see if that works.

I think you would need to upgrade your DVDA to work with newer burners.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

"It could be a number of things, including an outdated version of Quicktime (which the program needs to work with video files"

I think this is probably the answer.

I was trying to watch some quicktime vids on Drummrworld the other day, and they wouldn't play, even after I installed an updated version of it on the laptop.

Later, I uninstalled quicktime totally thinking maybe it was the problem with DVDA.
This was after I had troubles.

I will try a new install of QT.

Ironically, it may be the new version of Quicktime that is causing your problems.
Uninstall 7.6.4 and download and install 7.6.2 instead.
See This Thread for details of the problems others have been having and the solution!

Hi musicvid,

You must be right, the new version is still NOT working.
I'll look into the older version.

The roller coaster of this hope/failure is just draining my mind....

Thanks again for your continued help.
I'll let you know.

Okay.
Uninstalled Quicktime 7.6.4 and DVDA 4.0b.
Installed QT 7.6.2, reinstalled DVDA.
Machine still locks up solid, requiring removal of battery to shut it off.
Must be something else going on.

I had loaded up software for a Samsung MP3 player called EmoDio, that comes with digital rights mgt software that I have been unable to remove from the laptop.
This might be causing a problem too.

Am now backing up as much data as I can remember before returning the laptop to factory settings and starting all over...good god I don't want to.

I'll wait a bit longer hoping someone will have another suggestion.

BTW...yes, all the video I was processing was done in Vegas 7 mpeg-2 for NTSC DVD arch.

TheHappyFriar wrote on 9/29/2009, 11:23 AM
did you try a newer DVDA demo? Does another burning app (IE Nero) work, or does that lock up too?
Peter Vred wrote on 9/29/2009, 3:49 PM
I have not tried a newer DVDa yet.
Nothing else is locking up the machine at this time.

But the other day, the first time the machine locked up tight, I believe it was when running EmoDio, the Samsung MP3 player software, which I've deleted, all but it's digital rights management software, which I am not able to remove.

However, I am noticing that in general, my harddrive light that always flashes, is starting to flash so much that it is on constantly, a solid light. That's a bit odd.

It usually slows back to normal a few minutes after bootup is finished.
I've check my system resource levels during those periods and CPU usage is running at about 40-80%.

Quick time is running smoothly, version 7.6.2.

I just tried the trial version of DVDa 5b, it's working!!

So, guess I've got to update to vegas pro 9 now?
Darn...I'm quite happy with 7, and 9 is a very pricey upgrade.

I wonder what's changed from 4 to 5?

As I think on this more...DVDa 4 worked on my last vista laptop, why not this one?
Did SP2 do something to render it useless?
Do I have to buy an upgrade just so the software I've already paid for three times will work?

EDIT....Just realized while filling out a support form that the new Lenovo laptop is 64 bit. I found this:

"At the present time, these programs are supported on Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems:

ACID Music Studio 7 and ACID Pro 7
CD Architect 5.2
DVD Architect Studio 4.5 and DVD Architect Pro 5
Sound Forge Audio Studio 9, Sound Forge 9, and Sound Forge Pro 10
Vegas Pro 8.1, Vegas Pro 9, Vegas Movie Studio 9, and Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Edition."

No DVDA4, so I wonder why Vegas 7 DOES still work on my 64bit system?

So Okay, I've found DVD Architect Studio 4.5 for $39.95
I'm pretty much a basic user when making DVDs, nothing too fancy.
Would 4.5 do pretty much what 5.0 Pro will?
What would be missing?

No Blu-ray, subtitles or multiple tracks would be the most significant omissions, I think.

So I DL'd the 4.5 trial, it works fine.
Considering my "scratch the surface" use of the program, I couldn't tell it from a pro version.
I don't do High Def or BlueRay, and do all prep work in Vegas, so I guess this is the way I'll go.

Thanks again for the help and tips.

So I found out Architect 4 won't run in Vista.

Is the same true for CD Architect 5.2?
That's what I have and notice it won't detect my laptop's CD burner.

Vegas 7 will also not recognize a CD drive when I try to burn a Disk At Once CD from within Vegas.

Geez, does Vista require upgrading Vegas 7 too?
I records just fine, just won't burn cDs.
