archiving 4K 30fps

Randy Brown wrote on 7/3/2021, 6:08 PM

Hi, I didn't see a specific answer when I searched so I'll start a thread.

I've been collecting a lot of 4K/30fps for the last year or so (drone, GoPro, etc) and now have several TB I need to start cutting the fluff (prolly 50%).

What format should I render to to get lossless results?

There seems to be a lot of templates in VP18 but wondering which one you guys like.

Thanks very much,

Randy

@Randy Brown I know it's not lossless, but the Prores 422 HQ in VP18 is quite good, and smaller than lossless.

I shoot XAVC at 100 Mbps and I just keep it all. So far, I have a lot more money to buy hard drives than I have time.

I've been buying these in pairs since Hitachi sold their 3.5" hard drive business to Western Digital (one in my workstation, but not often powered on since I work with NVMe work drives while the project is active and the other in a container off site).

As I recall Prores is what I used to archive 1080p ...so that template is for 4K eh?

You have a valid point there John, HDDs for storage are cheaper now more than ever.

I suppose I could go thru and place markers where the usable material is and save the veg in that folder...good idea

Instead of Reencode any stuff, why not using a cutter that just cuts?

https://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tmsr6.html

Technically you could achieve that even for free with FFMPEG, it just takes a manual command line and specific timestamps and lenght mentioning etc. (but probably there is even a gui for that).

Try this FFMPEG Gui

https://github.com/mifi/lossless-cut#download

Or this one https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpegyag/

(NOTE in the field 'codec' it must be 'copy' as command, that means it will not reencode but copy the content)

If you have Vegasaur installed you could use it's smart trim feature (which is ffmpeg based).

@Randy Brown Yes.

If you were to go the Prores route, so not removing sections such as is possible using Vegasaur's smart trim, then I would do bulk batch encoding outside of VP. I have a ffmpeg based util for that. If I was removing sections first then I'd use Vegasaur.

I dont see any use in reencoding in a format that will not help in that case, if his material is 4K from drones like gopro etc. the footage most likely has under 100mbps. Making it into ProRes will only encrease the size, roughly by 600% or more. I also doubt that GoPro has 422 10bit footage. 4K ProRes has in the standard profile about 500mbps in HQ about 750mbps. EDIT; And not to forget if its 50/60 FPS it fastly even doubles in datarate.

“I dont see” Well, that’s stating the obvious.
