Are m2t files not typical mpeg2 files?

My Windows 7 64 bit system sees my m2t files as AVCHD video, where Windows XP 32 bit listed them as a Movie file (mpeg). Are m2t files a bit different from a typical mpeg2 file? Is there a way to render out, in Vegas Pro 9.0e, to a file that will list as an mpeg2 instead of m2t? I liked using them in other programs, but are no longer recognized with the new file type listing under Windows 7.

thanks,
robert

Have you tried just changing the m2t to mpg ? .. It is an mpeg file. Might work. I know that WMP will play an m2t that is changed to an mpg. Seems like Vegas insists that an HD render not be labeled an mpg.

Thanks for replying xberk, I looked at renaming (in Win 7) but that didn't appear to offer to change the file type. Is there a specific way of doing this that I'm failing to see?

thanks,
robert

Thanks MSmart, it worked perfect !! Much appreciated for steering me to the links, that was just what I needed. I'm only into Windows 7 64 bit for about a week now, and am not real familiar with it yet.

thanks again,
robert

For what it's worth, M2T files are structurally very different than MPG files. M2T files are "MPEG2 Transport Streams", which is a type of digital container format encapsulating packetized elementary streams and other data. The idea was to allow multiplexing of digital video and audio and to synchronize the output. Transport stream offers features for error correction for transportation over unreliable media. It's used in broadcast applications and some tape formats, like HDV to try and correct tape dropouts.

MPEG files that contain both video and audio are called "Program streams" and are much more basic than a Transport Stream and don't have the error correction capabilities. Program Streams are for more reliable media, like DVDs.

My Windows 7 64 bit system sees my m2t files as AVCHD video

Then they are M2TS files, which can contain either MPEG-2 or AVCHD, and not M2T.
M2T is HDV (MPEG-2) from a camera, usually tape-based.
Both containers are transport streams. Renaming them doesn't turn them into program streams. You should be able to mux either type to program streams in AviDemux.

Yes my Z5U is tape based, but I use the attachable CF recorder, ( I don't want to go back to tape again). You are right about it being m2ts. For some reason the file extension is m2t (within the recorder), but the data is in an mpeg2-ts file format. Still don't know why Microsoft didn't leave it alone. Renaming the file extension is easy now that I know what to do.

thanks,
robert
