Are .Veg Files able to be saved to use in other projects? Mine erase!

klever187 wrote on 9/16/2017, 10:41 PM

I'm new to editing and have been going through a lot of trial and error and going through forums but can't find the answer for like 3 days. Basically I designed a spinning logo by getting the transparent png scaling it down with track motion setting the frame points, changing the Y orientation to -90 then other frame point at 90. Then I created another copy and did the same. Then I saved the file but for some reason after like 1 or 2 uses in other projects the .veg file has no info in it anymore. I don't even see it's image or ANYTHING in the timeline nor in the preview window.

Basically I want to know how i can create and preserve a file to just copy paste into future projects.

Thanks!

A veg file is a project file. It contains information for a full project. If you want to build something like an animated Logo or open to use in other projects, you might want to render it to a finished video file (avi, mp4, mov etc). A veg file will not disappear with use but can be easily overwritten causing it to be different than it was originally.

Ok i was afraid someone would say that because i did render my logo but then when i copy/pasted it in another project I made, the logo was spinning, but it lost its transparency, then I used chroma keyer and dragged it into the logo and placed that little drop to make it transparent and it kind of worked but not really. It became transparent but it had small trails of black around it while it would spin 😕

If you had a transparent background prior to render, then you will still have a transparent background. What render Template did you us and did you activate it back on the Timeline?I have other tips to offer, however let's confirm you've retained your transparency or ALPHA channel component. Leave the Chroma Keying alone.

So far, I don't believe all is lost.

hey grazie,

I tried two different renders. I tried putting the .mp4 logo I rendered in sony AVC format back in the same render settings in my timeline which is in sony AVC. Then I attempted to put in ANOTHER .mp4 logo i rendered in WMV11 in that same timeline that I have in Sony AVC format and still got identical results (No transparent background anymore) is that what you meant by "Activate?" i just understood the word "activate" as in make sure that I have my template settings the same as my rendered file? Below I put the 2 settings I used to render to try and make it work.

Thanks for the response!

WMV 11

Render Template

Use this setting for high-quality HD video playback on a 3.0 GHz computer or better.

Audio: 192 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, WMA

Video: 30 fps, 1920x1080 Progressive, 8.4 Mbps

Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000

Then I also tried Sony AVC

Use this setting to create the highest quality 16:9 file suitable for uploading to Internet sites.
Audio: 128 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, AAC
Video: 29.970 fps, 1920x1080 Progressive, YUV, 16 Mbps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000

To keep the alpha channel, you need to render uncompressed and tick the alpha channel box on the render setting window.

There is a trick to enable alpha channel for other vfw codec by modifying aviplug.dll but the latest update on the thread is for vp14.161. It would be great if we can do the same in later versions.

Alternatively, drop your logo veg project file on another project. That would be much easier.

klever187 wrote on 9/17/2017, 8:16 PM

I'm sorry how do you render uncompressed? I looked online but it looks like that feature has been taken out in 15 or something if i'm understanding correctly? And yeah I don't have the option to tick the alpha channel box either.

The alternative you mentioned would mean I start a new project and just store it there? Then I copy paste the veg file in another project when i want to use it or something? Sorry i'm only 1 week into vegas! The image I attached are really the options that show up when I want to render. if that helps any guys

Turn off the YOUTUBE filter. You need to render to an AVI or MOV codec that supports alpha channels. They won't show up with the youtube filter.

Tried what ya said by finding a template that had .avi as an extension but none with .mov. The only problem is that when i selected the .AVI file and clicked "customize template" the dialog box that appeared had "render alpha channel uncompressed" greyed out. How do i go about ticking it?

In video format, choose uncompressed instead of Sony YUV.

Create your project in another instance of Vegas, then just drop the Veg file on a new timeline.

Ok good news and bad news 🤓bad news is that my 3 second uncompressed video I created using this method is 1.38GB! how?? so weird. A little more bad news is that it isn't translucent UNTIL a little good news is when i put the chroma keyer drop on the screen. How do I fix the file size? if you guys look at the first picture where I choose my format it shows an estimate of how big it will be ~1gb bottom left of the photo.

GJeffrey wrote on 9/17/2017, 11:05 PM

No need to use the chroma key.

Right click in your event, propertie, media tab, change alpha channel to premultiplied

Nothing weird, that's uncompressed.

klever187 wrote on 9/17/2017, 11:13 PM

thanks it worked! Just one thing tho, this 1.38GB size is unavoidable? like that file is really going to consume that much space? There are no other alternatives to what I want to do without the file being so big?

Use the alternative I gave you few post before if you don't want to render. (using nested veg file).

You can also convert your uncompressed file using another software (virtualdub for ex.) and choose a codec which support alpha channel.

ok I'll give nesting a shot. Never done it before! Thanks for the help guys

Here's one I did for you K187. I used the ANIMATION Template. Works a treat!

I'm also using the amazing Freeze Frame on Text Animations, Spinning Logo and several of the elements.

Grazie that is SWEEEET! I need to learn ASAP! Can someone explain nesting to me or provide like a link to something good I'm looking but can't find anything good. Like for example: [create your file>save as > choose file name] like in that structure because I just don't get it :'-( I tried doing all the stuff from your guys post but then the same black screen behind my logo appeared. Also when I created a VEG template I just didn't do it right. Like the file keeps getting wiped out of its info when I try to reuse it everything is gone

john_dennis wrote on 9/18/2017, 5:59 PM

Here is a nested graphic that I do dozens of times a week.

I build a project that animates the graphics on the screen and save to a project, in this case called "Final 25 Fly.veg"

Then, in the main project, I drag "Final 25 Fly.veg" to the timeline using the Vegas Explorer.

Tutorial follows:

Caveat: It's important to maintain file and folder continuity if you wish to use the projects in the future. If something goes wrong with a nested project, you have to fix it in the nested project. You won't get any help to fix it in the main project.

klever187 wrote on 9/18/2017, 6:52 PM

I just went through the ENTIRE index and contents of the Vegas manual and they don't mention anything on nesting...John thanks for the video! Ok, thats what I did.

1. So, lets say you decide, "hey I wanna make that appear for a little longer on my screen." and you proceed to stretch it for another 10sec. will this effect the nested file? by that i mean, make it useless because you altered it? So the next time you try to put it in another project by finding it in explorer and you drag it in, it loses it's contents?

2. But, If you just leave it un-altered you'll be able to use it countless times in other projects?

Also,

3.If you decide to render that video file of the girls swimming with your "Final 25 Fly. Veg" file in your MAIN project. The nested Veg will remain in tact?

4. maybe my problem lies in creating my logo, but then when I put it in a new project and stretch it out it could be causing the issue?

Sorry for asking so much it's just i spent countless hours on this and can't figure it out, I just like knowing the mechanics of everything haha Because

GJeffrey wrote on 9/18/2017, 7:04 PM

John video is very good. It's a very good start but now it's time for you to experiment, this is the best way to learn

Try to do what you ask and you eill figure the answer out quickly.

john_dennis wrote on 9/18/2017, 7:56 PM

1. Nothing you do in the main project will have any effect on the nested project. Make changes in you nested project. You can open the main project and the nested project simultaneously in two Vegas Pro sessions. Once saved, changes made in the nested project show immediately in the main project.

2. Yes.

3. Yes

4. GJeffery is correct. You need to go off by yourself and sweat over it some.

I did sweat quite a bit haha ^^ So far so good, john, with the nesting. But, it starts this way, and the contents may disappear, but, i'll update you guys if it does. Now, as far as the INITIAL problem I had which was creating an mp4 of my logo rendered and having that trail of black boxes appearing, I finally managed to figure it out a bit. Basically I load my mp4 logo in my timeline> drop chroma keyer into my file> apply the drop> then I messed around with "low threshold" "high threshold" and "blur amount" and created a preset to have it specifically for my logo, just to automate the process. But it got rid of the trails practically. I attached the photo of the screen in chroma.

Honestly though, if nesting is still available its a bit faster since it eliminates the step of chroma keyer. But we'll see if i'm able to keep the nest because, ultimately its what matters to me to create little effects like GJeffery made 😀

Grazie wrote on 9/18/2017, 9:53 PM

Chroma Keying is not the way to go. Developing and producing a fully available Alpha Channel is. Why are you so shackled to this MP4? I don't get it?

Please realise, if you haven't realised it already, CK will also remove any colour in your Target too.

klever187 wrote on 9/18/2017, 10:04 PM

create little effects like GJeffery made 😀

haha I meant Grazie up ^^ there buddy. The reason why is because GJeffery told me to use AVI which I did but the file was SUPER big and really everything else i've been trying isn't working. Like right now I just went back to check on my "nested veg file" and AGAIN it's gone. it erased my rotating logo and left me with my channel name only. but I got this message

I didn't touch my file at all. All i did was throw it into a few projects to test then I closed and opened other projects and kept doing it. Then I came back later and boom it wasn't working as always. Could "Auto-save" be causing this?

Grazie wrote on 9/18/2017, 10:18 PM

Ah, I'm starting to understand just what it is you're doing.

After producing AVI ALPHA Media, and thought this is too big, did you then rerender and produce that MP4? Is this how you ended up with that MP4?

Or have I got it wrong?
