Arrghhh 8.1 crashes

I've just -last couple of days- installed Vegas 8.1 on a new Dell Studio 540 (Quad 2.3/6Gig RAM/Vista HP 64) I have imported/opened a project from 8.0 which will open and preview just fine -make that used to, see below- (length about 95 mins) but when I try to Render/Print to Tape (Canon XL1s) things go wrong.
Renders: Only some of the video clips render (they preview perfectly). On one occasion it only rendered the first five minutes (there were no marked regions/loops) the file size was the same as the "complete" version (around 20gigs.)
Print to Tape: Pre-renders 97-99 percent then everything stops dead.
Now I cannot open any .veg file
Any ideas?

In case anyone read this and has some ideas, here's more info.
I just tried to open a different version of the same project (read from another drive -TG for back ups-) and it opened, after "finding" all of the graphics/stills/clips. And was able to preview the movie.
It's rendering right now but I have a nasty feeling it's still dropping chunks of video, i.e. recording black instead.

Yes. I've reverted back to 8.0c for the same reason.

Got the same exact machine...but I went up to 8 GB RAM. :)

What I'm seeing is everything loads up fine...then, if I scrub through the timeline, half the clips will "go red", and not come back unless I close and reopen 8.1

Annoying, to say the least.

Im seeing clips go red too in 8.1 so Im using 8c, that works perfect. Dell Precision M4400 laptop with Vista 64, 4GB ram.

I had similar problems with an HP dual core machine with 64. The problem--for what it's worth--turned out to be in the integrated software and hardware that came with the machine. As soon as I switched to a heftier Nvidia graphics card and replaced the 250 watt power supply with a 450, everything worked fine.

You may want to check just in case.

Ok, sorry I've been absent but other work prevailed.
Anyway after uninstalling/reinstalling (roughly three times) it suddenly started to work as well as it ever did including "print to tape".
I did discover that I was rendering/pre-rendering to the same 630gb drive that the OS etc is on, once I switched to an external ...Bob suddenly became a relative!
So I have just installed a 500gb internal (Seagate Baracuda $80.00 +plus tax in store), and will do some more tests as time allows. But for now I got the 90min project onto tape which was the original goal.
BUT, now I'm having problems with installing/upgrading to 8.0c on my original machine (so I can do network renders). I have stripped every bit of Sony from the drive/registry etc. but 8.0c is still giving me a very hard time when I try to start it. Right now it is hanging up at the "Creating Audio engine".
At this point I'm considering re-editing in Premier CS3 and dumping Vegas as I have wasted as much time (almost) as it would take to re-edit, just trying to get Vegas to run!
Done venting - for now.
Sony can you come up with a "Clean uninstall" uttility please? It would help.
One last thing the only 8.0 update that went smoothly was from 8.0 to 8.0a, what's up with that?

Update/addendum to the above message.

8.0c is now showing me an error message 0x80131902 (message missing)
Under the details tab I get
"Failed to initialize script host."

The Sony Knowledgebase in response this message says to do a clean uninstall and directs one to clear out the Program Files of all Sony software (including set up) and then into the registry to do the same.
I've done this.
I'm still getting the "Failed to initialize script host." message.
Frustrated is the mildest term I can use right now.

Update #2
So my original machine a PowerSpec Pentium4/3.2Ghz/ 2GB ram?XP Pro sp2 does not like any version other than the original 8.0 and maybe 8.0a -not going to bother - as 8.0 installs and runs just fine.
If any of you out there have a clue as to why, I'd appreciate your ideas.
