Artifacts showing after installation of ADM V7900

Paul Fierlinger wrote on 11/19/2014, 12:48 PM
I had earlier brought up in another thread that artifacts were appearing in certain windows of both V 12 and V 13 after I had installed a new graphics card AMD FirePro V7900. This was happening only when I opened my external monitor. I learned to live with it.

Today this nuisance stopped just like that! I hadn't changed anything that I knew of so I checked Windows upgrades and sure enough, there had been one this morning which required of me to reboot. When I did that my ASUS bios opened asking me if I want to revert to default or accept changes. I opted for change. This tells me that all along my Vegas architect problem was occurring due to a Windows bug. But one thing niggles me; could I have found my problem fixed even before I had rebooted? Can W updates work that way?

Just wondering, why did you go for a V7900? Did you buy it new and how does it perform? I recently switched from 2x GTX580 to 2x R9 290 and I am very happy with the switch.

Because I never got a final answer here exactly which model is the best for me and went with what my IT recommended. He might have picked that card because it provides me with 4 monitors, which I must have. Strangely, the card performs flawlessly in V12 and slightly under performs as far as smoothness of playback goes in V 13, though only on some events when it stutters between 24 fps and 19, which isn't even always noticeable or I correct with prerenders when it bothers me, I would use just V 12 if not for occasional black clips and some crashes while rendering. Most of the time I edit in 12 and render out in 13 which works pretty well.

If you need 4 monitors on one card then yes, you may need the V7900. Last time I recommended you 2x R9 290 or 290x; so there where recommendations... not sure what you mean with final answer. I just changed out my 2x GTX580 for 2x R9 290 which I got from eBay for around $450. I can now edit 4K much better then before and 1080 60p works like a charm.

Then your choice must have been a no go for my IT's final verdict for the number of monitors. I can run 1080p 24fps in V 12 without ever seeing a flicker of hesitation and 12 doesn't have that odd bug with the master bus slider, so that's another reason to prefer V12. Now that the artifacts issue has been resolved I am happy with what I have and have hopes that the next update of V 13 will have the bugs fixed. There's no reason why 12 should outperform 13 in the final call. BTW, If you want to see my WIP I'd be happy to send you a link.

OldSmoke,

I am glad you really like your 2X R9 290. However, take you a long time and finally, you take the switch to AMD Land. :) . To me, I don't have any specific brand. I go with what ever brand that work best for me. In this case, AMD got my nod.

Sorry that I upset you with an awkwardly formulated remark. This was not my intention. What I meant to express was that there were so many suggestions that it became impossible for me to make an unqualified decision. I passed all all your ideas to my IT, he made the decision for me and I have no feelings of regrets. I also can't see how anyone could have foreseen the artifacts anomaly since it was a temporary situation fixed by a Windows upgrade.

No offence here Paul. The V7900 is certainly a good card and will drive all your 4 monitors. If you are ona 4770K platform then 2 cards are not really an option as they would run PCIe x8 mode, a limitation of the socket 1150.

Have you tried testing your system with the SCS Benchmark project? It is a very good indication of what your system can do.

Bruce

To be honest, if not for Vegas and 4K editing I would have stayed on the 2x GTX580s. The drivers feel more solid and they also support my 3D CAD software better. Now I have to look for water blocks for my "babies", these are running hot and loud at the moment.

No, I never have. I've been coming across this item on various threads but never ventured to explore because I presumed the results would be way over my head. If you think I should go for it, then I'll go -- so where to?
