Artistic ?.. hard cut and dissolve

As I dissolve my way through my rock band video I was wondering if you experienced editors have a rule of thumb about when and how often to hard cut and when to use dissolve. I realize the esoteric nature of the question..
your thoughts are appreciated.

Just another thought: dissolves usually suggest a lapse in time. For example, a slow dissolve from the interior of a coffe shop to an exterior city skyline might suggest that several hours have past. If a cut is made, it might suggest that something is going to happen to happen in "real time" with the previous shot in the coffe shop.
