aspect ratio when rendering

when I import a mpg file into vegas it looks OK on the preview box. But when I render it I cant seem to preserve the original Aspect ratio. If I render using Main concept DVD PAL then the file shows up in 16:9 but in a 4:3 box so the buttons in DVDA have black strips top and bottom of the button picture. Rendering a seperate video (PAL widescreen) and audio AC3 is better but with that combo I have vertical black strips each side of the movie. these mpgs play OK before they go into Vegas.
I'm using ver 9.0b on XP

thank you

In order to be able to help, some basic information is needed:

What size and pixel aspect was the original?
What were the project settings?
Was "Maintain Aspect Ratio" checked or not?
What were the render settings?
Was "Stretch to fill output" checked or not when you rendered?

Alternatively, if you are unable to determine this information, you could post 30 sec. of the original video format somewhere, and the output format you want to use, and let us play with it.

The original file was a TS file off a humax freeview box. This was converted to a mpg file. I played this in KMPlayer and below is the file info provided by KMPlayer
Format : MPEG-PS
File size : 1.06 GiB
Duration : 1h 3mn
Overall bit rate : 2383 Kbps
Video #E0
Format : MPEG Video
Format version : Version 2
Format profile : Main@Main
Format settings, Matrix : Standard
Duration : 1h 3mn
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 2025 Kbps
Nominal bit rate : 15.0 Mbps
Width : 544 pixels
Height : 576 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16/9
Frame rate : 25.000 fps
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Interlaced
Scan order : Top Field First
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 1.915
Audio #C0
Format : MPEG Audio
Format version : Version 1
Format profile : Layer 2
Duration : 1h 3mn
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 192 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Resolution : 16 bits

Project settings tried are PAL DV Widescreen and Match Media Settings
Render settings tried are Save as Mainconcept MPEG2 template DVD PAL (black strip top and bottom) and DVDA PAL Widescreen video stream (black stripes left and right). Stretch to fill output doesnt help. Where is the Maintain aspect ratio tickbox?

Width : 544 pixels

In order for this to be true, the PAR would have to be 1.88235. I'm not sure this is something Vegas could understand, without a clip it is hard to know.

Again, why don't you post a 30 sec. clip somewhere, it could probably be figured out quickly by some of the members here.

If you right-click on the video event, there is the "Maintain Aspect Ratio" option. It is there for when your source aspect does not match the project aspect.

OK Ive got more info for you guys. first the result I got with the black bars on the left and right of the picture were actually on the original ts file, oops!
As regards the problem with the black bars top and bottom the only solution seems to be to render seperate files using DVDA PAL widescreen video stream template and AC3 or WAV for the audio. Is this OK to use? What is the thinking behind rendering seperate streams anyway? It seems to solve my problem but if i didnt have it would rendering seperate streams be an advantage?

thanks
