ATI composite capture yields blank Sony YUV video

Subject says it all. I'm sure there's already a post on this forum somewhere, so please direct me to it.

I captured some video in Vegas 5.0d. I thought I would have to pull some tricks to get vegas to recognize that I had composite plugged into my ATI Radeon 7200, but my VHS feed was waiting for me there in the preview window. So I went ahead, in non-advanced capture, and captured two 55 second clips. Great!

When I got back to the timeline and preview interface, the videos (unknown 001.avi and 002.avi) were there in the media pool. Dragging the media into the timeline pulled only an audio track, and no video track. So I looked at the properties, and it says the audio is fine, but the video is "offline". So I went back to the capture interface, where my two clips are still on the list. I double click them to preview the clips, and they preview fine in 'print-to-tape'. I can also play the files in media player, jetAudio, etc. Checking the properties in the capture area shows me that their video format is:

29.97 Sony YUV Codec.

So where is the problem arising?

Different... but strangely similar

yeah... it's similar, but unfortunately, if I open another instance of vegas, the clips still say (stream offline) for the video. I can't imagine it would be the Codec, esp. if it plays fine in capture and media player. any other thoughts?

really, nobody has any ideas? does anyone have problems capturing with an ATI card? How do I change the settings to capture something more readable by vegas? sorry to bump, just baffled.

It may be a little more related than you think to my experience with YUV. In my case it plays just find outside of Vegas in WMP also.

Sorry... can't help any more.

Is there any way you can choose a different codec for the ATI card to use? I would think the codec is there because you have installed Vegas.

Capturing with the ATI card is a pain. It really doesn't work very well, even with the latest software.

I just fired up VirtualDub and did a test capture, first using YUY2 and then UYVY. The YUY2 capture works fine, and the UYVY capture produces total black.

I then closed VirtualDub and opened the Sony Vegas capture application. I then looked at the poorly named "ATI Rage Theater Video Capture Capture properties." You need to change the resolution from the default 320x240, and you can also change the color space between the two above. I tried both, and this time, both gave me usable video, but the video and audio length were not the same (a typical problem with ATI card captures).

Someone else who knows more about codec installation that I do will have to pipe up and say something, but clearly there is something strange going on with the Windows, ATI, and Vegas interact.
