Audio and video WAS sychronized

The audio and video of a mpg file was in synch until I put it in the timeline. It's synched in the preview section but not once I put it in the timeline. It does not even turn pink. anybody know what's happening here and how to fix this?

Thank you so much for your response. That was an interesting discussion, a lot of it over my head. But one difference here was I did not rip the footage from a DVD, just captured it from a friend's camera. It played okay in the software for her camera and in VMS in the preview pane, just not in the timeline.

what camera that was exactly? And why this camera recorded in plain mpeg? Cameras usually use the DV codec, not the old mpg version... Maybe you could upload somewhere 3 seconds from that camera somewhere so we can have a look at the file format.
