Audio Bus Questions

1. Is there a way to route the output of one bus to another?

2. Is it possible to have mono and 5.1 busses other than the surround master?

2.a. Is possible to 5.1 audio tracks?

3. What does bus assignment do relative to bus send levels?

4. Is it possible to numerically enter the relative levels in a track or bus send to a surround master?

Thanks,

David

1. Is there a way to route the output of one bus to another?
No, Vegas does not currently have a bus to bus routing option. You can create a bus to send signals too, that bus can be routed to one of the master buses that gets assigned to your 5.1 output buses. So Yes and No, but just not as flexible as bus to bus routing.

2. Is it possible to have mono and 5.1 busses other than the surround master?
Yes and No again,Vegas only has Stereo buses that you can create

2.a. Is possible to 5.1 audio tracks?
Yes and No see above responses.

3. What does bus assignment do relative to bus send levels?
Nothing the sends are independant of the bus send levels, the send levels get mixed in the bus, then the bus send level determines the level of that mix going to the master buses.

4. Is it possible to numerically enter the relative levels in a track or bus send to a surround master?

You can numerically enter a track volume fader level by clicking on the numerical value and then entering it. You can't do this on the track sends going to a bus, but you can select that track, then hold the "shift" button and use the left/right arrow keys to move the send in .1dB increments. You can do a similar method on the bus sends, by selecting the bus in the mixer section and then using the up/down arrows to move the fader in .1dB increments.

Hope that helps,

I'm not sure I understand the answer to 1.

Does the assignment of a track to a bus do anything?

One of the areas I wanted to set numeric values is in the 5.1 panning control. It doesn't appear to allow numeric values or snaps.

Curiously, after getting fustrated, I tried Premier Pro and found it had yes (trivially simple but very poorly documented) yes answers to 1, 2, and 4. Maybe a model Vegas developers can use in the next version.

Note: Premier Pro doesn't let you drag windows out of the main window, making using some of their features very awkward and difficult, especially on a two monitor system.

1. Not officially<g>
2. No.
2a. You mean 6 channel audio on a track. If so, no.
3. Consider a track like a channel on your mixing board. It has a main bus assignment, Aux sends, and FX sends. A sub bus can be treated like a send with its "return" being directed to the master. An Assignable FX bus is like a send/return pair. You "send from the channel" and "return to a bus."
4. You can't assign a track's send to the surround master. You can only numerically enter track volumes (gains). Good point that you should be able enter all bus gains and sends numerically.
