audio data rate

My ac3 sounds "OK" considering...

I have a data rate of 192 (the default setting. I was thinking about making all my audio (stereo and 5.1) 448kbps to improve quality on the stereo tracks.

Does a higher data rate give me better quality ac3?

Does it have any negitive implications? (like playback on certain players)

Like any form of compression, the data rate plays a factor in the quality of the file. You lose nothing, and gain a little, particularly in the lower freqs. You'll lose room on the disk, but that's probably not a big issue for you. The Dolby site has a lot of great info on this subject as well.
