Audio device in use by another application

I bought a Steinberg UR22 audio interface but am having various problems when trying to use it with Vegas Pro 7.

1. In Acid, when I set my MIDI input and playback devices to UR22 I get the error message:

The output device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.
The input device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.

2. If I load a VST instrument I can play notes through the instrument's interface but can not through my MIDI keyboard (I assume related to #2).

Is there a way to find out what other application is using the UR22? I've checked Task Manager/Processes and can't see anything running that would be using it. Does Acid have a error log file or something that would show what other application is using it?

It should be noted that I also ran into issues when using the ASIO4ALL drivers. Everything was working great and suddenly one day ASIO4ALL started giving me errors about audio device being in use by something else. I bought the UR22 to solve all these issues but I am still having them.

I un-installed and re-installed Vegas Pro 7 but it made no difference.

The UR22 came with Cubase AI and the UR22 ASIO and MIDI work perfectly with Cubase AI so there is some sort of issue with Acid.

Please help!

In Vegas Pro 11 I set the audio device to UR22 and set MIDI input and output to UR22 and I DON'T get the error messages:

The output device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.
The input device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.

So this seems to be something strictly with Acid Pro 7. I'm at a loss.

Make sure that windows is not assigned to use the UR22 for its default audio and MIDI I/O.

If you don't enable the UR22 MIDI in ACID, do you still get the error?

Where to I go to see if Windows 7 is assigned the UR22 for default audio and MIDI?

The windows audio settings dialog exposes this.

Control panel or the speaker icon on the far right of the task bar. Also covered in the Windows help.

The UR22 is set as the default playback and recording device. I don't see where I look to see if it's set for MIDI I/O though.

Peter,

To answer your other question, if I don't enable the UR22 MIDI I get:

The output device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.
The input device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.

If I enable UR22 MIDI I get:

The output device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.
The input device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.
The output device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.
The input device Steinberg UR22-1 is in use by another application.

Update:

I set the playback and recording devices to NOT use the UR22 for default and that solved the one set of errors. If I enable the UR22 for MIDI in Acid I get the input/output error and when I disable UR22 MIDI I no longer get any error messages.

So I just need to figure out how to disable Windows from using the UR22 for default MIDI.
