Hello there VEGAS forums! Long time reader, first time poster here.
I've been using Vegas Pro for quite a while now, in fact I go all the way back to when Sony still owned it!
I've recently run into a bit of a tricky problem, and I was hoping that maybe I could find a solution.
I'm currently working on a rather big project, (it's shaping up to be 30mins+ at this point) and during my editing shenanigans I noticed that the audio section of the timeline has a tendency to lag when selected and or manipulated.
Most, if not all, of my projects include a lot of audio tracks and files. I'm talking 10+ audio tracks and 200+ audio files, if not more. These audio files are usually a mix of .mp3 and .wav, though I mainly favor .wav.
The .wav files mainly contain Voice Over and are edited thorough Audacity, then outputted as 48,000 HZ, 24 Bit, MONO. They're also quite long, usually hitting up to 20-30 mins.
After I place them into VEGAS, I then split, move, and delete sections of the .wav files as they correspond to the script. It's during this that I started to notice a bit of lag as I do my editing.
The problem goes as so:
1.) I select a .wav file.
2.) Sometimes, there is a noticeable delay before the file is highlighted and is able to be manipulated. (Usually a 1-3 second delay.)
3.) After the files is highlighted, there is noticeable lag as I split / move the file. (Again, a 1-3 second delay.)
4.) After I place the file, there is a noticeably delay. (Again,...you know the drill)
5.) Repeat until project completion.
Here's a video showcasing this:
Note that the file being in this video manipulated had these attributes: 48,000 Hz, 24 Bit, MONO, 00:29:43:02
According to the general tag, the plug-in that's using this file is wavplug.dll.
At first, I was under the impression that it affected ALL (.MP3, FLAC) Audio files. But after some messing around, I realized that it only affected the .WAV. and long (15 min+) audio files.
My testing went as so:
Converting the long .WAV files to .mp3 or FLAC still resulted in the same results.
Converting the long .WAV files to 16-bit resulted in the same results.
Cutting up the .WAV files to short 5 - 10 second increments resulted in the same results.
Adding VST Plug-ins to the track or the file resulted in the same results. The same can be said for removing any present VST plug-ins as well.
Utilizing Buses and routing tracks resulted in the same results. So did not doing so.
(!!!) Starting a new project and importing the long .wav file on a single track resulted in buttery-smooth manipulation. I'm guessing that as the project progresses and more and more audio files are added, the lag begins to grow.
All in all, I'm fairly certain that this problem mainly affects .wav files and "long" audio files, especially once projects start to grow larger and larger.
I can live with the lag... I suppose. But I'd very much rather have a solution. y'know. Complex, long form projects are my bread n' butter.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
And as a somewhat related side note, all my video files and tracks are not affected by this problem. Various file formats: .MOV (PRORES), .MP4's, etc. No problems whatsoever moving, splitting, selecting, adding vfx, general manipulation, all good.
