Audio from MPEG2 not being included

I know this have been replied before and I still don't get it. I have a Sony DCR-DVD403 DVD Handycam® Camcorder DCR-DVD403. The video and audio is fine when I play it on window media player. But when I drag the clip to the timeline in Movie Studio the audio file is not being included, when I try dragging the .avi file to the timeline both audio and video were there, is there a way to fix this without having to convert each clip into something else cause that is just too much work.

This is the replied on the other post which I don't get.

I guess it depends on what format the audio is.

Movie Studio only PCM audio and not AC3, which may explain why you are not getting any audio.

There is a freeware program called VirtualDub Mpeg which will allow you to convert AC3 audio to PCM. You will need to download the appropriate AC3 and Mpeg 2 plug-ins for VirtualDub in order for it to work.

There are lots of different ways of encoding audio - if you rip a cd it's encoded as pcm (.wav files), handheld players typicaly use mp3 and wma, while Sony and Apple both have their own formats. Commercial DVDs use yet another format - Dolby Digital, also known as AC3. That's the format your camcorder is using, but it's not supported by Movie Studio. You don't have many options - either convert the audio or get a different camera.

Even if you convert the audio you're still not out of the woods though - the video's encoded as MPEG2, which is a very poor format for editing. If you search this forum you'll find a lot of discussion about the problems with Handycams!
