I'd like to have some music on one of my videos start out very thin and tinny, like it was coming out of a single speaker AM radio, then have it melt into full, rich stereo. I'm very much new to audio fx, so any help would be appreciated.
Try Jay Rose's Digital Playroom and books. Lots of examples of stuff just like this. Basically you use the equalizer to remove the sounds that make it deep and rich and then slowly bring them back in with key-frames.
Vegas uses envelopes not keyframes for audio FX automation however not all FXs are automateable and it can get very confusing with more than a few envelopes on the one track.
Here's what to do.
Duplicate the audio track and mute one of them.
Now click on the audio FX icon in the track header of the track that's not muted. Select the track Eq FX in the chain and adjust the low and hig pass settings to knock out the low and high frequencies, just keep playing around until you get the thin sound you want. The little graph gives you a good visual clue too.
Now unmute the other track. Add a volume envelope to each and use that to fade one out and fade the other one in. There's fancier ways to do this but this way it's easy to see what you're doing.
