- Built-in PC audio device - never
- Laptop external audio device - always.

PS - None work well on any of my systems PCs (4+) on V13 with any VST Assignable FX !

Mainly voiceover work for me:

Neumann KM-84 mikes into Classic Soundtracs FMX series mixer via dbx 166 stereo compressor.

Main outs from desk straight into M-Audio 66 interface and into the digital world.

Geoff_Wood wrote on 8/4/2014, 2:35 AM
OT and just my opinion, but seriously suggest you try out another compressor. I have some 266s for PA, but wouldn't think of using them for recording. KM84 and DBX166 are really on the opposite ends of the world wrt audio quality.

I've also got a couple of RNCs which are fantastic. I would LOVE some KM84s.....

Hey Geoff - I've been recording voiceover through the dbx for over 20 years - I know they're supposed to be noisy but mine has always been whisper quiet. I only use it to keep the levels under control while recording with just a bit of light compression. I do everything else with plugins.

The KM84s are great vocal mikes (I know they're supposed to be for instruments, but...)

You should have heard it all when it was going through my Neve console... The Neve is somewhere in Texas now, hope it's making someone's sounds good now.

@Grazie

"Nobody asking why?"

If that was meant for me...

Curious as to what users are using as well as the age and type of the devices: USB/PCI/FireWire.

Laptop audio workflows vs desktops.

As well as how many use and deal with ASIO.

As well as the inevitable problem reports.

I'm using Boot Camp and VMware. If I don't need GPU acceleration then I will just use VMware on my Mac desktop. If I need GPU acceleration I'll reboot into Boot Camp. VMware allows you to use your Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine so it's the same Windows installation either way.

> "I never tried a third party device using the virtual machines. I have read about it being limited and or problematic."

I have not tried to use the Fast Track Pro when using virtualization either, only when rebooting into Boot Camp. I can certainly try that out and see how it works. VMware has pretty good USB support and the Fast Track Pro us a USB2 interface so it would be interesting to see how it works.

> "I assume some users don't use Vegas for recording or extensive audio workflows. Low latency is not really that important when just playing back. Depending on your buffer settings, Wave and Mapper will work just fine, but it still depends on what type of audio work you are doing."

I agree for playback but I and others do Voice Overs and for that we need to punch in and out with accuracy so ASIO drivers that provide low latency are important in that scenario.

> "Even then, I sometimes recommend ASIOForAll as it can suffice when one is in a pinch - or on a laptop."

I've used that successfully on my old Windows laptop. I haven't used it lately because I'm on Mac OS X most of the time, and these days I only use Windows for editing in Vegas Pro. All of my other applications that I use on a daily basis are on Mac OS X including Sound Forge Pro for Mac. ;-)

Hi Peter

With my old XP laptop, I was using a Tascam FW-1082. Was working well, up to Vegas 10. Since migrating to a newer PC to run 13, I haven't been able to get the automation working the way it was. I haven't given up hope yet... ASIO Fw1082.

AKG Preception 200
Behringer ECM8000
Rode Videomic Pro and Stereo Videomic
Onboard Canon T3i mono, Panny GH4 stereo
Sennheiser EW 100 G3 radio
Boom pole
Aurelex Mudguard
Pop Filter

Headset:
Sony MDR 7506
Sennheiser HD 280 Pro
Tascam TH-02 (freebie, not good)
Other freebie (just horrible but they make noise)

Recorders:
Zoom H2
Zoom R24
Korg D32XD
T3i, GH4

I'm using the experimental 64bit ASIO driver, and don't record on laptop. If I did, I would use an interface.

Phonic Helix Board 18 FireWire
Phonic ASIO
Used with an older Dell Latitude D630, Dual Core, Laptop with Windows XP and Vegas 8
for Multi-track remote recording
Although the mixer is loaded with features, I only chose it for the number of inputs VS cost.
The first 8 Channels have XLR or 1/4" TRS (and trim control) and then there are 8 more, some 1/4" TRS and some RCA Stereo line input channels. Can record up to 16 tracks, but have never needed to go beyond 10. The Phonic has surprisingly super-quiet inputs. The only cheesyness is the mixer pots and sliders, but I've never had any desire to use the mixer, as I'd rather mix using the Vegas timeline and effects plus certain favored VSTs.

I also have a BlackMagic Intensity Pro PCIe card for preview output (when it isn't crashing Vegas) and that uses a Blackmagic ASIO driver I think.

Audio Hardware: Alesis MultiMix8 USB mixer
Drivers: No special drivers, plug-n-play using Windows standard drivers

I've used this setup for about three years with no issues whatsoever. The mixer maintains its USB connection to the computer even when its power is OFF, so it's instantly available when powered ON. The preamps are obviously not high end at this price range, but they're quiet and adequate for VO work.
