Audio in AVI 'silent' on Vegas 4

I have an AVI file that is a short clip extracted from a DVD. The audio component is AC3- 6 channel. When I drag and drop the clip onto the Vegas 4 (latest build) timeline I get both the video track and the audio track. The audio track even builds the peaks. When I play back I get no audio. I have tried setting the Master Audio Bus mode to both Stereo and Surround 5.1 and I still get no audio. (The channels are routed correctly to my Delta 1010 8 channel system.)

If I use a utility to extract the audio from the AVI to a PCM/WAV file I can put that on an audio track and it works OK.

Is the AC3 plugin I have with Vegas 4 only good for encoding?

Any expertise appreciated.

In a word YES it's only for encoding and will not decode and replay within Vegas.

Thanks. I thought maybe something else was going on since it actually creates the audio peaks and they are accurate when compared to the .WAV conversion I bring in as the replacement audio track.
