Audio in Vegas (Spot?)

wolfbass wrote on 5/15/2005, 6:17 PM
I've imported some tracks of a friend's CD, then mastered them, then put them on the vegas timeline, where I've exported them to Soundforge, cleaned them up etc. and I'm ready to burn them onto CD.

When I render to wave, the levels (which are fine in Vegas prior the the render) come out distorted, and peaking.

To check, I put the rendered files back into Vegas, and yep, during the render everything's been boosted, and the wave file is clipped.

Am I rendering to the right template? All I want to do is burn a CD.

I'm using Wave (Microsoft)(*.wav) template.

All help appreciated.

Andy,
What is the meter reading when you mix the audio in Vegas?
Any plugs applied to the master bus? Any pans in the mix?
Just for curiousity, why not master in Vegas? You know you can master and prep, complete with ISRC codes right inside Vegas, right?

Thanks for the reply Spot.

I master in Logic because I use the Powercore Card Master X3. The plugs on that I find easy to use and very effective. It's always worked, so I haven't looked at Mastering in Vegas.

The levels prior to rendering are all below 0, normally around -0.3 - -0.4.

After rendering to .wav, they are all red lining. There are no plugs on the track, or the master.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the link.

On the track list, left of the timeline, is the Track FX plugin indicator Green? Vegas 5 and under automatically applies three Track FX to the audio track. Those might be causing the problem. Try disabling them all.

John:

Nope, there are no plug ins ANYWHERE.

Made that mistake a long time ago, aware now.

The problem is that the levels bump up when I render the wave.

I want to know why.

Thanks for the tip though.

Bump:

Still no clue as to why the levels are up.

Any further guesses guys?

You didn't mention any pans. Yes?

Have you downloaded any test tones to see what's really going on?
I'd recommend downloading a test tone that's -12dB, rendering it with no changes, see if it renders at -12.

Hello All!

Success! The answer: Choose a template. I was rendering on 'Default'. As soon as I changed to 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, PCM wave file, I had success.

Thanks for the help, Spot, the test tones I'm sure will come in handy at a later date.
