Audio issue in vegas pro 18 build 527

when i drop or import an audio track into a vegas pro 18 project and go to play it, all i get is a screeching sound. It doesn't matter if it is an mp3, wav, or other type of file. i have checked the audio device (Beringer interface) and everything appears to be set correctly. what am i missing?

Have you tried a different audio playback device.

Do you have Sound Forge Audio Studio (AS) installed by any chance. The AS low-latency 2016 driver has been known to cause noise similar to what you describe .. not only in AS, but in other audio programs like VP.
If this is the case, see this comment on the Sound Forge forum for the registry tweak to fix it.

I'm running Sound Forge pro 14 and Vegas Pro 18. i have noticed that the noise is when i try to use an MP3 audio file in the Vegas timeline. i have tried as many of the "fixes" as i could find online including the ones in this thread, and either come to a dead end (one step is not available) or follow all steps to no avail

The low-latency 2016 driver is an issue with Sound Forge Audio Studio only. It is not installed with SF Pro.

Try resetting Vegas:
