I do audio recording a lot, and I have a pair of m-audio BX8 monitors, which are definately a few steps up freom the surround kit - however, they are GREAT and really accurrate, once you get used to them. Not only that, but M-Audio has pretty decent support too.

The LX4's are great for smaller rooms, the BX series are great for larger rooms. I love the Mackie and Blue Sky systems too. JBL has a new tunable system thats getting great reports too. What's the budget like?

I'm planning to spend less than U$ 1,500 for the complete set.

If you're interested in the LX4 complete set, might I suggest you check out B&H Photo?

Dvdude, that's a great price, thanks! I've finally decided to buy the M-Audio system. The lowest I'd found was $437. Every litlle bit helps!

Using the M-Audio Delta 410 Pro, I can't seem to find and connections that go from one 1/4" plug to two RCA plugs. Plenty of the single mini-plug to dual RCA! Is there such a beast as the former?

Sorry, a bit rushed right now, so I can't get the link for you. But if you do a search on LX4 and my username you'll find a price of $405 (from back in January) and the best cabling connections (ignore my Radio Shack post; use the following one). Not sure if those cable connections solve your need, though.

go to radio shack, they have all connections.

but, how about a system for 100 dollars? HA

Videocurmudgeon,
EVERY Radio Shack in the country should have one of these. I've always got a couple for connecting laptop outputs to RCA inputs. Even bigger Walmarts sell them in their stereo department, they are quite common. It's a 1/4 inch TRS male to R/L male RCA

Thanks, Spot, I'll check it out on Monday!

Creative T5400
Logitech Z640

Creatives are supposed to be more linear. Logitech are really bass heavy to please the gamer crowd.

Unfortunately, I've had to put off my LX4 purchase for awhile, so I went with the T5400. These hooked up to my new Firewire 410 will be outclassed, but they'll have to do for now.
The upside is I'll have an excellent audio card for voiceovers and such. I'll just monitor through my headphones and use the T5400s for checking volumes as you mentioned.
Newegg has good prices for these.

I bought a set of the Creative T5400s last spring, based on some very positive reviews on trusted sites. You won't mistake them for a $1,000 set, but for $100 they are terrific.

I installed a SantaCruz 5.1 sound card with a built-in 10-band equalizer, then borrowed an audio spectrum analyzer and ran pink noise through them. They weren't that far off to begin with, but now with the equalizer they are pretty flat. Bass rolls off severely starting at around 45Hz, so I guess I'll have to do without the low organ pedal at the beginning of Also Sprach Zarathustra.
