Audio out of Sync

I'm new to video and to Vegas (the program, not the town). I gather the problem I'm having - audio going out of sync with video - is common, and I haven't seen any applicable fixes in the last month or so of messages to this forum.

In my case, I've recorded a 56 minute VHS tape using WinTV 2000 (software) via WinTV PVR USB2, using composite video in and faux stereo audio in (an adapter cable from the VCR's mono audio out). The resulting MPEG2 recording only gets very slightly out of sync by the end. When I import it into Vegas Movie Studio 6 Platinum and trim away the commercials, joining what's left together, the degree of synchronization from beginning to end isn't noticeably worse. But after I render the file for DVD production and burn it onto a DVD+R in Architect, the audio goes out of sync within the first 5 minutes and just drifts more and more out so that by the end of the movie it's perhaps half a second off.

Of possible relevance, when I first rendered the file in Studio it crashed when it tried to open Architect. I had to restart my computer three or four times before it stopped hanging on startup.

Should I chalk it up to beginner's bad luck and render it another time? Or is this kind of problem to be expected?

Thanks,
Syd
