Audio out of sync by about 30 milliseconds

Hi,

Im recording with my laptop Dell Precision M4400, 4GB memory so a pretty new high end laptop. Im using an M audio Fast track USB interface with it.

Everytime I record the resulting recorded audio is about 30 milliseconds late of the previously recorded tracks.

Ive tried messing with the audio device latency settings but nothing seems to make any difference in this recard.

I already had this problem earlier with another laptop and USB interface, now I have a totally new system. Im sure Im just not finding the correct settings. Any help would be much appreaciated.

Thanks

Sami

The higher the sampling rate and bit depth, the longer the latency.
At 16 / 44, you should hardly notice it.
At 24 / 96, you probably will.

Fortunately, you can adjust for latency under Preferences->Audio Device.
Only works with ASIO drivers, if memory serves.

That latency should be automatically reported by the soundcard driver and compensated for.

You can manually override and set a value yourself, but I'd be more interested in finding what is not working as it should....

Indeed it would be good to know whats causing it. Any ideas how to accurately measure the latency offset?

Hmm... It seems Im also getting drop outs (= short 10ms silences during recording). This is really strange.

Ok... well it seems the most obvious thing that didnt even cross my mind in this plug n play day n age, I updated the latest drivers from M Audio website and everything seems to work fine now, blush :D
