Audio pop problems

(This didn't get much interest in the Audio section, so I'm reposting here...)

I've just found some (all I've tested so far) of my existing projects now play back with lots of audio popping. In quiet sections of audio, there is no popping, but it shows up when the sections get louder. I have applied the 4.0d patch since last working with these projects.

I highlighed a ~10 second section, cut it and pasted it into a new project. Pops still there. Rendered to new track and played. The pops are gone. Even if I mute the new track so only the original tracks are there, the pops are still gone.

What gives? Any ideas? It only occurs within Vegas, no other apps.

Thanks

Gary

I used import some WMA files into my video projects in Vegas, and sometimes I would get some clicks in the rendered AVI file. If I re-rendered the project, sometimes it would be gone, sometimes not. I've converted these WMA files to MPG and the problem has never come back, so I'm sticking with MPG audio from now on. Not sure if your'e using WMA, but if you are maybe this will help.

Not exactly sure what the setup of your timeline is but there are issues with audio being cut on the same track. A work around is to A/B your audio. However i have not heard this causing poping at the output stage - in other words when you playback it pops but when you render the audio is fine. I would check this first because you say "Rendered to new track and played. The pops are gone."

Mp3 format will pop on the timeline and sometimes after the render it will pop as well. Possible solution is to make sure you have "Best" set under you audio resample options.

Audio distortion due to volume could also be the issue. In those spots where you hear pops, what the the level? Are they loud sections? I ask because you say "it shows up when the sections get louder." If you are peaking it will pop - digital is very unforgiving in these situations. Try turning those sections down and see if it solves the poping.

Last thing it could be is your sound card. Some cards don't handle "loud" very well. Check your output settings, check your cables, check your speakers.

The bottom line with all of this is you said when you render there are no pops - so it leads me to believe it is either high levels of audio or cutting on the same track.

I didn't have the problem before. All files are DV / AVI. The things that have changed since then (unfortunately, I don't know exactly when the problem appeared):

1) Upgraded Vegas from 4.0c to 4.0d
2) Installed a new motherboard, and had to "repair" OS, then re-apply many OS patches.

The audio card is the same. I did not change the driver for the audio card (Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1), unless the OS update changed the driver (hmmm, something I need to check). The motherboard has on-board audio. I might try switching to that to see if that helps.

Thanks for your input.

Did you try adjusting the volume at the loudest spots? And did you A/B the audio?

As for not having the problem before - the audio pop thing caused when audio is on the same track comes and goes. Sometimes I notice it, other times I don't. If there is ever any question to be safe I just A/B all the audio.
