Randomly when I render a long movie to .avi to hard drive, it winds up with great video and no audio. I immediately try a short segment and it works fine. If I render the movie again I usually get audio with it. Has happened on various movies I've made. I also removed and reinstalled MS but problem stays. I have MS 3.0b, running on XP, with plenty of memory head room.
