Audio (Sound waves)

Miooong wrote on 2/8/2018, 8:52 PM

Hello there! so i'm using Sony Vegas Pro 15 for quite long. I'm going to make this simple and straightforward, what i want to do is i want to synchronize the text appearance with the music im using, but it's hard for me to do it, i watched some tutorials on how to do it and what most of them do is locate where the beat starts in the audio track by the help of the sound waves. It's hard to explain but i'm trying my best to clearly explain everything. let's go back to the problem, if i import a video along with it's audio, the audio track is fine as well as the sound waves, but when i import a new audio it is where the problem starts, even though the audio is already playing a loud beat, the sounds waves are still calm. Here's a screenshot for you to understand everything https://imgur.com/a/OWFof - I put a circle in the part where the loud beat happens but take a look at the sound wave, it's still calm. I hope you understand everything, i'm looking forward for your answers. thanks!

As your timeline is playing, try drumming on your M key to create markers on the beats. Then you can use them to line up your video.

Hey Nick Hope! thank you for your answer, but it would be more easier if i use those sound waves to find where the beat happens, do you have any idea on how to fix it? your answer is appreciated!

Two suggestions ...

1/ Dramatically increase the size of the audio track on the timeline so as the audio waveform is displayed much larger; and/or

2/ take the audio track into an audio editor like Sound Forge or Audacity, highlight the "soft" sections of the track and dramatically increase the volume of those sections (waveform will then be much bigger), then put the new track on another audio track on the VP timeline, and use that as a guide track only.

You maybe misread that waveform. The waveform of the area of the red circle in your screenshot is far from being calm. It's loud there.

Zoom way into the timeline with your mousewheel. Drag the bottom of the audio track header (at the left of the timeline) to make it bigger. You probably know those 2 things already.

The track looks very compressed so the beats appear to be lost in the sound around them.

Hey bro, the encircled part of the waveform is when the audio beat happens already, i'm listening to the music and the beat is already happening but the waveforms are still calm. Waveforms seems fine when i import a video with sounds but when i import a new sound it is when waveforms seems not fine anymore.

So you are using terms that do not really make sense. Are you saying that the waveform does not match the song?

OR.. are you saying that the waveform does display at all? If that's the case: "View> Waveforms and Frames"

It is an easy mistake to make, but as Marco pointed out your waveform is really full within the red circle.  Your audio waveform is a red line on a white background -- actually a pair of them, one above the other -- so the waveforms there are filling the display.  (I think you are looking at it as white lines on a red background, but its the other way around.)  You will have to zoom in on the timeline so that the waveform expands horizontally in order to see the beats.

But as Nick has suggested, most people would simply play the timeline and hit the "M" key to put down a marker at each beat.  Then it is real easy to align a text item with a marker on the timeline, or between markers.

exactly.

I have to agree with the comments about using the "M" key to add markers on the downbeats. Since the waveform is mostly solid red (what you're referring to as 'calm', as opposed to 'peaky') you can't see the beats as easily. There is nothing to 'fix' here...the song was just normalized with dynamic compression and it's hard to see the beats. When we edit audio (whether in Vegas, ProTools, Logic, etc) we use a combination of visual editing, and using our ears. Use whichever is best for you, or whichever is easiest. In this case, using your ears to listen to the music in real time, and adding markers on the downbeats is the solution here. Hope this helps.

To add to the confusion, in certain types of music the backbeat can be louder than the downbeat. You need to decide which type of beat you want to edit your video to, and that is often easier done by manually using the "M" key.
