When you say your levels are fine, are you saying this based on what you hear from your speakers -- or by watching the audio level meters?

Never trust your speakers.

I'm an audio engineer :). Ya, the meters are all well under any overload, and it sounds sharp and clean on my speakers. But the rendered movie still doesn't sound good, can't figure out why.
Any idea what vegas is doing to cause this, or what setting maybe causing this?

Please post your rendered file properties using MediaInfo.
Also upload a sample of both your original and rendered audio so we can look at the waveforms.
Keep in mind that AAC is inherently less-than-wonderful.
