Audio sounds terrible - only through receiver

My video sounds great on my computer: music, voiceover, and sound effects. When I play it through my receiver 5.1 it sounds distorted, clipped, hollow. The receiver plays TV, Roku, movies etc. with no problems.

I've noticed some late-night low-budget commercials have the same hollow sound as my videos. What am I doing wrong?

What audio format and settings are you rendering? Does it sound ok through the receiver in mono or stereo?

How are you playing it through your receiver, file, bluray, media player?

I settled myself in for a boatload of testing, and learned:

My audio is fine, over VLC, Windows Media Center and Emby for WMC. It only fails on the Emby channel of my Roku. That seems like an EMBY problem to me.
