Audio / soundtracking in Vegas Pro? (dv editing)

Thanks everyone. Your tech is beyond me, I don't know how to share like that. But what file please - the one with the failed wav soundtrack? I tried to load that this evening and the soundtrack had gone, I had the same pop-up messages as in my previous screen shot - I'm told Vegas is building a proxy file followed by an error message telling me that a proxy file cannot be made.

My process is a direct dv capture from running cine film in a projector - I video through the projector's film gate. The Panasonic cam is firewired to a computer running Serif MoviePlus in capture mode, this gets me a raw AVI of my cine film to hard drive. I then edit that in Serif. Cine film tends to flicker here and there, even when the capture speed is synched and I have no deflicker filter in Serif, that's why I do Vegas, I imported a Boris FX deflicker filter into Vegas and it works. I only needed it for about 5 seconds in this project, but it is very handy.

Cine film is silent now but always was in my experience, I never encountered up market sound cameras back in the day. So for a soundtrack I will typically put something together in Mixcraft and mix it down to a wav file, then add it to the audio line in Serif.

Postscript: I don't think my method can be duplicated on modern cams which are also USB 3. I don't think direct capture to hard drive is possible any more. I have not experimented with dv card cams. Also, cams are made differently today, the technology is changing every year. You have to synch the cam speed with the projector / filming speed. For me this is film at 16&2/3rds (16.667) fps to cam running as 1/50 shutter speed, otherwise you get 'strobe flicker'.

Sure.

"The Panasonic cam is firewired to a computer running Serif MoviePlus in capture mode, this gets me a raw AVI of my cine film to hard drive. I then edit that in Serif."

So which is the file whose audio does not work in Vegas Pro? The AVI captured via Serif MoviePlus or the file exported from MoviePlus after edit?

Just follow the steps on their web pages.

Vegas Pro has its' own DV capture too: File>Capture Video.

Probably something not right with the DV file captured with Serif MoviePlus, this is the file we might need to analyze. (EDIT ADD : or the one file after edited & exported from Serif MoviePlus)

Here I post the DV file I have, captured Vegas' DV Capture:

Oh joy, oh bliss - Vegas is now trimming the end off my project, so I'm getting 4/5 of my video. Second render, same result. At this rate I want a refund.

MediaInfo - I already posted one of those for the AVI in screenshot earlier in the thread.

"Vegas Pro has its' own DV capture too: File>Capture Video." For firewire please? Does Windows 10 support firewire?

Marco. wrote on 2/1/2017, 6:32 PM

Yes, Vegas' DV capture tool is based on Firewire connection. I captured hundreds of hours of DV video with it in former years, even live capture from DV cameras.

Don't know how about Windows 10. If you did your DV capture with MoviePlus - doesn't you use MoviePlus and Vegas Pro on same system?

But we still don't know where the files which doesn't work come from.

Ah, ok - this one... sorry: http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/o1kric1/carter%20codec_zps3p6yzs1x.jpg

- you can post it here if you want rather than posting it on external photo hosting.

I compared yours and mine:

I notice your audio channel's codec is PCM (DV) ?

Mine is PCM (Little/Signed). Not sure if this causes the issue..., because so far I know, Audio of DV is uncompressed format.

He has a DVCPRO avi file. Don't you need a specific codec for that type of file?

Guys, I found a workaround. I deflickered tiny bits in Vegas of the AVI created by Serif. I then rendered these clips as Windows PAL DV AVI in Vegas then re-imported them back to Serif, they slotted into the edit line perfectly, Serif may also have configured these frames to the original project by default? I then finished the audio edit in Serif and done. I am quite exhausted but have at length achieved what I set out to do with Vegas. The original footage was a little underexposed here and there I might add: that's just my bad -
