Audio support problems

When I simply add any video file, with a video and audio strem into vegas, only the video track is added, and audio is ignored.
Also taking a stand-alone audio, wav file will not work, and cannot be added to an audio track.
It is like vegas is refusing to accpept any audio, mp3/wav and simply treating it as video only.
Does anyone have any idea why?
However mpeg2 audio will open, the type in mpeg2/svcd video files.
thanks

Very strange. Where are the video files derived from? *generally* if the codec lives in Windows, Vegas will open a file. This is usually far more problematic with video than audio. However, if you can't open just a standard wav file, it suggests you have something on your system preventing this. As I'm sure you know, wav is the most basic file format of all.
What other software is there? You may find it easiest to uninstall/reinstall Vegas.
