Audio sync problem

After telling John D how easy it was to burn a DVD, I went and watched my newly created epic, only to discover that the Audio is not in sync with the video. I have encountered this problem before when using other software, and it is really frustrating. If i shoot someone talking to camera and use the whole clip, it the problem doesn't seem to occur, but as soon as you edit, maybe needing to trim a false start at the beginning, you get what I jokingly refer to as 'the satellite delay effect '
I would be interested to gain an insight into why this happens and how it can be avoided (both audio and video remained grouped throughout the life of the project, by the way).

I used to have sync problems. I ended up having to change my capture device. I was using gigapocket with the video card that came with my computer. But eventually a sync problem developed. I changed to a Canopus 110 converter and the problem went away. Supposedly the Canopus converter eliminates sync problems altogether.

My problem was more pervasive though. A captured video may or not have been out of sync. But almost surely when I began to edit it would lose sync.

My heart sank when I read your reply, but it also reminded me that the video in question had been captured by some other software which I was using before my recent conversion to VMS. I recaptured the offending clip and replaced it in the project, and it now seems fine - I even tried various edits to try and throw it off balance, but lips are moving nicely in time now.

Prior to editing (and thus losing sync), you might try highlighting just the elements you need and rendering them to AVI (using thre "render loop area" option). This will lock your sync and give you more managable files. Bit of a hassle, of course....
