Audio/Video Synch Issues with VV4 and ADVC-100

All,

As a relative noob as far as video editing goes, I purchased the Canopus ADVC-100 based on a good month of study from this forum and others as one of the best ways to bring in analog video from my Canon camcorder to my VV4 environment. However, I am finding that the audio track in every project I capture from tape is out of synch with the video in Vegas after just a few short moments of playback. I am using an external TV monitor when this issue occurs. If I switch to the internal Vegas viewer...everything is cool.

So am I doing something wrong during the capture or is it just a factor of my hardware not being able to keep up when previewing to an external monitor?

My machine is heavy duty...P4 2.53GHZ with 1GB of RAM...Western Digital 80 GB drives (with 8 MB cache)....M-Audio Delta 66 for all the audio....I have never experienced any issues with audio-only projects. And yes - the locked audio dipswitch is set to ON on the Canopus box.

Can anyone spare a moment to go over your stock settings in Vegas when capturing from analog tape? If you have used the ADVC-100, that would be a bonus

I appreciate the help.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

There is a setup under preferences for resyncing audio when using the External Preview monitor.

Yes this does occur sometimes when viewing on an external monitor. However I am pleased to report that after you render and produce your video, the audio will be perfectly in sync.

So - is this a Vegas issue or just a limiting factor when sending the video signal out to an external monitor?

Cuzin B:

We have not seen this drift you are referring to with the ADVC-100. Are you sure it's set for NTSC?

Are you saying it starts in sync and then drifts?

Are you using the "NTSC DV" project setting?

Sonic,

The box dipswitches are all fine. I am in NTSC mode for the Canopus and NTSC DV in Vegas and the audio is set to locked. A typical capture will be fine for a minute or two and then start to drift out. When I first noticed this a weeks back, I saw my audio was set wrong (to 44.1) instead of 48 so I fixed that and it seemed to be fine for a single project.

Then I made sure that all new project settings were reset to ensure a zero drift capture but it made no diff. Like I said...very noticable when going to an external monitor (TV in my case). I do have a VCR inline as well...Canopus to VCR to TV but that shouldn't be a problem...should it?

Still think there is something I am missing.

It's impossible for audio and video to drift during a capture, they are locked together in the DV frames. Also, project sample rate setting, either 44.1 or 48 kHz can't possibly make audio drift from video either; all source audio is resampled to the project sample rate. What is your source? Are you sure it's not the cause? Or, what is your soundcard? Perhaps it is being inaccurate. Try switching Audio Device driver in Preferences.

Sonic,

Some of my specs are in the first thread - including the sound card (M-Audio Delta 66) which has been outstanding. My source is a Canon ES980 Camcorder (analog). I agree that the capture is fine but during playback in VV4 - something is going on. I will keep at it.

Sonic,

Just wanted to add that this issue is rapidly becoming the "jerky playback on external monitor" more than Audio/Video synch issues. What I am seeing is very similar to a lot of others in here with the video acting weird on my external TV with VV4.

Has anyone come up with a decent solution to this yet? I am pretty much ready to rip my machine out of the rack and spend a afternoon reseating the firewire card so I get no conflicts (IRQ-wise) to see if it makes a difference.

I am running XP Pro and my ADS Pyro is sharing IRQ 18 with one of my piece of shit USB ports. I am running the ASUS P4B533-V mobo and this thing has about 40 freakin' USB ports taking up space. And IRQ spots. So I am wondering - is this an issue?

Any help would be appreciated
