Audio/Video Synchronization

My current v10 wedding video project using HDV sources has a slight out-of-synch speaking voices with the video. The Help file topic "Audio/Video Synchronization" suggests to me that VMS will recognize an offset with the "View/Active Take Information" option. My events don't show any offset even though I can easily "see" it while playing my timeline. The Help file indicates that I can right-click on the audio/video event and select Synchronize/By Moving or By Slipping but neither are available (grayed-out). Is there a procedure for manually adjusting the audio/video synchronization?

Hi Ken, click on the clip > hit 'u' on the keyboard (that ungroups audio from video) > then move the audio or video to you liking > 'Ctl' click audio and video > hit 'g' on the keyboard to group them back together. Let us know if this helps. Cin

Thanks, Cin.

I am working on the final project for a wedding video. I rendered out from three separate HDV projects into one final combined project and I was just putting the finishing touches on it. The audio lags the video by only 8 frames so it isn't significant but ......

I rendered out a one minute long piece, added it onto the end of the project, ungrouped audio/video and was able to slip it, no problem. Having proved I could do this I grabbed the right-most event and moved it to the right to get it out of the way. I wanted to work on the middle event so I moved it to the right so it was isolated from the first and third.

Here is the strange part - I went to ungroup and found the event was already not grouped! I could select the audio or video independently but any attempt to move one moved the other - as though they were grouped anyway. Can anyone explain this behavior?

It sounds as though you have rippling enabled.

Hi Ken, I think TOG may be right as far as you have auto ripple enabled. Something to look for is if the audio and video are ungrouped and not synched (probably not spelled right :O) the audio will be a pink color in the timeline. When synched, it will go back to default color. Let us know. Cin

Of course, one thing to keep in mind is that the pink unsync'd color only shows up when Vegas knows the audio & video events are shifted relative to each other on the timeline compared to how they physically appear in the original file.

If the original file has the sync off then Vegas happily shows the sync as correct on the timeline when it's still off, and correcting it will make the unhappy pink unsync'd color appear when it's right.

The rippling was it! The offset was actually twelve frames which, although not awful, was noticeable. I temporarily turned rippling off, adjusted until it looked right, re-grouped the audio/video, trimmed off the excess, pushed those puppies back together and clicked Save! My event now has a light pink color but the voices match the video. Thank you all for the help.
