How did you import the file and how did you move it (them) to the timeline? I assume it's a single file, right?

Copy/Paste imports multiple event/takes on VP-16, I would assume the same on other VP versions. Two instances of VP must be open as you are probably already aware.

Its a single file (.wav).

I tried several ways to import it 1. cut paste from windows explorer 2. cut paste from project media. 3. right click and copy -> dialog re Add Across Time, Add Across Tracks, Add As Takes. All do exactly the same thing as I get one audio item on the timeline with the takes sequentially in the timeline labeled Record Take 1, Record Take 2, etc.

I did not try copying from one instance of Vegas to another. I'm trying to learn how to save a store these multi-take audio files for future use.

I wonder how that file can have multiple takes. Aren't these multiple streams instead? Takes are more or less a Vegas Pro proprietary feature concept.

Or do you mean you did the recording itself with Vegas Pro? In this case these Takes are not in a single file. Each Take is a separate file then but while doing the recording within the Timeline the files will automatically be added into the timeline as Takes within one audio event.

I recorded using Vegas Pro.

Immediately following recording the 1st take, Vegas asked me for the file name. I set up a loop and recorded 3 multiple takes. At this point I could play back and choose take 1, 2 or 3 and switch between them in playback.

It appears that the saved wav file has all the takes (as when I open it later in Vegas in another session, the takes are all in the wave file but sequentially).

I suppose the question is how to get Vegas to recognize I want the takes and not to add them sequentialy on the timeline.

Additional takes I create are from the "Open copy in audio editor" command if that makes any difference.

"It appears that the saved wav file has all the takes".

That's a misunderstanding. It's not one saved wave file. For each loop recording cycle there will be one separated Wave file. There's no way to tell Vegas Pro which Wave files should belong to one single Event when you import just one of these wave files later. You need to add the other Wave files manually as Takes then.
