Audio won't go in with video

I have a video clip, played it on windows media player; the video and sound were both the way they should be. Then when I put the clip in sony vegas the audio does not go with it, so I have a video with no sound.

What kind of file is it? What format & codec?
Where did the file come from?
How did you get the file onto your computer?
