Computer Videomaker journal (June 2002, p. 38) states that VideoFactory 2.0 has automatic scene detection capabilities. I cannot find this feature. Does VF 2.0 have auto scene detection or not?
I don't believe VF does. What it will do is to make or chain automatically a capturing file allowing me to "import" video footage which is larger than the 4gb equivalent file size. On the mattter of magazine accuracy I've seen:
1. VideoWave described as the best thing since sliced bread
2. Vegas Video costing £80.00 GBp
Back to your observations, I also use Studio 7 which does have automatic scene detection - somebody could have got their Firewires Crossed!
VF DOES have Auto scene detection. If I capture from my camcorder, each scene is captured into a separate file. I think it only work with DV though, not analogue video.
Is this what you mean? or am I barking up the wrong tree (again).
I've got Av coming through a Dazzle bridge. Are you saying or infering that the DV coming in will also be "scene" detected - even though the DV has been converted from an AV source? Interesting.... I'm a bit at sea with this... If this is the case I too would be able to detect scenes. I know I can do this in Studio 7 - I didn't think it would also be possible with VF.
I believe thet the scene info is stored on the tape on dv cameras but not on analogue cameras. I don't think analogue to digital converters can cope with that as the information isn't stored on the source. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
The auto scene detection in Sonic Foundry's video capture is based on breaks in the timecode on DV tape. Whenever you've paused or stopped the recording, video capture will detect this as a new scene because the timecode will "burp" at those points.
A video stream captured through firewire from an analog->DV source will have continous timecode even where the recording has changes, and therefore scenes will not be detected.
To enable automatic DV scene detection, in the Capture tool's pulldown menu click OPTIONS-->PREFERENCES-->Capture, then make sure the "Enable DV Scene Detection" option is checked.
