Auto transcode by scripting?

Not done any scripting yet, but wonder if it is possible to write a script in such a way that when a clip is placed on a particular video track, it automatically get transcoded into another codec? An example will be transcode from uncompressed or Lagarith AVI to MXF.

Add: Or maybe the first question should be: does it make sense to wait for the transcode to happen right on the timeline?

Do you want this to happen with no user interaction whatsover? I mean, do you want the script to "listen" and then act when a predefined situation ocurrs?
If you are willing to activate this yourself, by clicking a menu item it is definitely possible. For automatic detection (listening) you maybe need an "extension" istead of a script, I am not sure if a script can have event handlers for events in Vegas.
Placing a clip on the timeline will be such an event in this case. The scrip/extension will then check the format and then transcode it to the format of your choice.

Or maybe the first question should be: does it make sense to wait for the transcode to happen right on the timeline

I do not understand this, sorry

No, because it could take quite a while, depending on the codecs involved and the length of the clip.

There are two products already available that do what you want, just not in the way you want. One is GearShift from VASST and the other is the Multirenderer from Peachrock. The later will take all the files in one folder and transcode them using Vegas to another folder. Gearsift I think does that plus it lets you easily switch between the proxy and the full raster version of your source media. One or the other should meet your needs.

Ingvar and Bob, Thanks for the reply. Since I am going to transcode my source clips into either MXF or CineForm for editing, I am looking for a way to streamline the workflow. I will look into GearShift.
