Automate the events in the rhythm of the beats (Resquest)

An example of an "edit to bpm" I made a couple of years ago with the automatic alinement tools (set grid to measures and snap to grid) inside Vegas (only external tool Mixmeister used to determine the BPM). Don't examine the picture quality, footage is from 2006 in HDV and I compressed heavily for upload through my very slow internet connection .

The Timeline, take a close look, no markers needed:

@3POINT

The method you use is also functional and what really matters is that the end result is achieved. I particularly like his editing style, he has soul and conveys feeling. Unfortunately the current generation is more concerned with many effects and forgets the essence of the issue that is much more important. Congratulations!

Good discussion guys!

I can only add a couple minor points:

1) You can access the SLIP tool by holding down ALT key when in normal edit mode. No need to change.

2) I recently read an interview with the editor of "Lawrence of Arabia" who said she didn't like to cut on the music as it quickly became predictable & boring for the audience. No criticism implied here, just giving another artistic point of view to think about.

Great tutorial.

One addition.
If you find out that your particular song or live music doesn't have a fixed BPM (tempo changes) or Mixmeister doesn't detect the correct BPM for the song / live music, try Music Video Sync (V2). It uses a sophisticated algorithm (of Queen Mary University of London) to detect  the "real" positions of the beats (the Marker positions).

@FocusOnVegas

Thank you for the informations. I made new tests here and was impressed with the accuracy of the actual location of the markers.

I had not realized this before, and I thought I was creating markers based on Vegas Timerline, but now I see that this creates the markers based on the actual BPM of the song and that's great.

I also realized that Music Video Sync creates the markers only in the music event without having to select the region and not in the entire project and this is correct.

Another advantage is that if you want to start the markings at a specific point, simply position the cursor at the desired point and the chosen beat.

And there are other advantages that I am still discovering.

Once I saw the real potential, I decided to adopt it as the main tool for this type of work.

It is a great tool without a doubt. It will help those who, like me, like to edit their videos always in the rhythm of the song.

@Former user

Thank you for the video's with different methods, including Music Video Sync, so everybody can choose his own workflow.

@Kinvermark

Music Video Sync has some "artistic" features (see the manual):

  • "Beat offset", f.i. if your Marker "beat interval" is every 4 beats and you want to cut starting from beat 3 (so cuts are on beat 3, 7, 11... instead on beat 1, 5, 9...);
  • "Slide around beats", slide a fixed number of video frames around the calculated beat positions;
  • "Random Slide (+ or -),  slide a random number of video frames around the calculated beat positions.

Enough to make some non standard "artistic" video edits?
