Vegas does not include the scene detection that Studio uses. It will only scene detect by time/date changes. Since a movie or vhs has no time/date references, there is no scene detection.

Studio offers scene detection by content or time/date. I like the content option also.

Check out "ScenAlyzer Live", at http://www.scenalyzer.com. Several of us Vegas folks use it to do our captures, and it can do timecode or content change splitting. It also names the clips based on the timecode, and can build an "index" of a 60 minute miniDV tape in 5 minutes, which I find particularly handy.

I can't imagine doing capture without ScLive. I use its optical scene detection all the time when capturing analog sources (e.g., VHS) via the pass through on my DV camera. Its scene detection is much faster and more accurate than Pinnacle's Studio. Also, it doesn't crash (unlike Studio).

I have found that using SCLive scene detection, while it does work well, yields a slight skip between scenes once they are assembled in Vegas. This is with using the Low Precision setting, one scene per file. I could not find a way around this. Of someone knows a way to not have this happen, I would love to hear it! :)

So, I found that manually splitting the scenes works best, sound-wise.

I too am a new convert from Pinnacle Studio and was wondering how to capture scenes. This post answered my question - thanks folks.

One follow-up question - the website has a free version (I assume a previous version of the software) and a commercial version. Which do you use?

The "free" version does not capture. Spend the $33 and get SCLive. Not only will it get you the optical scene detection, it also gives you the ability to capture 4 channel audio in one pass with video via firewire.

I tried Scenalyzer live and maybe it's the solutions to my problem (automatic scene detection), but I have a lot of dropped frames.
Can I disable the preview option ??? I can't find this option.
Is there a manual ??

File|Options|Performance|Preview While Capturing And Playback

Once you actually start capturing, the preview stops.

SCLive is very, very good at NOT dropping frames. I found it best to have a dual boot system with no system processes that could possibly kick in and cause dropped frames. Things like Norton Utilities, defrag utilities, etc. will make the system drop frames.

With SCLive, I have been able to do a tape backup (NOT to the capture drive), surf the web, and check my e-mail, all at the same time with no dropped frames. I am, however, running 6 hard drives. With a dual boot system, I captured 8 hours of the last super bowl with SCLive without a single dropped frame. I am running an AMD XP2400, 1 GB RAM, etc.

Thank you.
