Autoripple does nothing by itself. Control+L switches the function on/off. If it is on when you do a delete, it will close automatically close the gap created. Similarly, when it is active, dragging a clip will propagate that movement through the timeline to the right. So doing a delete and then activating ripple will not give you the action you want.
