AVCHD and XP

As I understand it XP cannot, at least natively, read the files on a DVD formated as a Blu-Ray playable AVCHD disk. I also understand that Vista can.

But don't quote me on this. I'm looking for confirmation.

This is an issue for me since I am backing up my CX7 files to standard DVDs with a Sony VRD-MC5. These AVCHD DVDs are playable, though not automatically, on a PS3. This is a very convenient scheme since you have a playable archive.

I also backup to my hard disk using a straight file copy from the CX7 Memory Stick. These files are readable in XP and they are what I use for editing. So I have two independent backups. One is readable in XP and one is not.

But if I lose the hard disk copy I apparently will not be able to retrieve the data until I upgrade to Vista, something I am not anxious to do. So I'm hoping that some clever teenager out there with good software skills has written the utility that will let me read my AVCHD disk in XP.

Has anyone seen the teenager or otherwise found a solution to this problem?

Check out Vasst.com and look for AVCHD Upshift.

I also have the CX7 and VRD-MC5 and make AVCHD discs. I can read them from both Windows XP and Vista. You should be able to as well.

You should be able to browse the directories and transfer the clips from the disc just like you do from the memory card. The only difference is that the extension is changed to .m2ts on the discs.

Nero with the HD pack will also let you browse avchd disks (and HD DVD disks) in XP

I have Nero and the HD Pack but it is not obvious which of the many Nero programs is the right one to use. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Edit: Well my Pioneer DVD came to life today and ... yes it will read the files natively in XP. But for the case where I have a multi-disk backup I cannot read the second disk. It shows up blank so I'm still interested in seeing if Nero or some other utility can help me out.

Nero, Ulead, and others author red-laser AVCHD disks which can be played on some BluRay players using a UDF 1.6 and above file format which XP does not natively support, but Vista does support. In order to open and view these newer UDF red laser AVCHD disks on XP, you can use Nero's InCD, a packet driver which, by default, does NOT install with the normal Nero 8 Ultimate installer. It is, however, available from the installer if you chose a "custom" install and then select the inCD option.

Installing this software has other implications, most notably, that the drive and a blank disk can be accessed as if it is a hard disk, since the packet writing treats the blank disk as a writeable volume. You will also find that the new inCD controls which are accesible from the Systerm Tray allow you to specify what to do when blank disks are inserted, ejected, etc.

Hope this helps,

1. Blu-ray and AVCHD disks use UDF 2.5
2. Nero's InCD is very buggy.
3. You just need to install UDF 2.5 reader driver. That's it.
